Title: Securing Lexan to Control Panel
Post by: Wiliamo on July 18, 2004, 04:24:20 pm
I have my Control Panel all installed.  The buttons, Sticks,  etc... are holding down the Lexan to the CP.  When I attacth the T-Moding to the CP, how do you secure the edges of the Lexan to avoid lifting up.  I have a 8" area of nothing between the buttons and the bottom of the CP, to rest your hands and wrists.  The Lexan is not totally flat against with the CP near the T-Molding.

Thanks,
Wiliamo

I used screws at aprox. 1 cm (0.4") from the edge ... I like the result !

I used these, the middle item on the page, Binding Barrels with Screw (http://www.mcmaster.com/asp/DisplCtlgPage.asp?ReqTyp=CATALOG&CtlgPgNbr=3039&CtlgEdition=&RelatedCtlgPgs=3039,3040&sesnextrep=420547352971967), actually found em in the 'specialty hardware' bins at Home Depot. Used 1 at each corner of the CP, gives it a nice machined look, from the top all you see is the plain end of the assembly, almost like a rivet. Aluminum is the ones I found, but it looks like you can get brass, stainless, alum, black, or plastic to fit your look

Black screws about 1/2" away from the edge.

Thats the same thing I got above. Never really imagined there would be an entire company dedicated to that single item :)

maybe im alone in this - but i found that my buttoms screwed down were secure enough to hold the plexi down. to t-mold around the edge was fine too. everything is secure with no flappy bits.

In my old CP I used #8 screws with finishing washers.  On my current CP I just let the buttons do the work.

I paint my lexan control panels from underneath with paint desinged for painting lexan remote control car bodies.   After paint dries I epoxy to control panel surface.  You could just as easily put a bolt in each corner and allow the buttons to hold the lexan in place.

If you want to reall stand out from the crowd, you can cut your lexan 1/4inch smaller in all directions, and exactly route out the area for the lexan depth

Doing that only works on a good custom CP, alsong as art fits within the borders. You do not need to screw it down then as Wiliamo said the buttons etc hold it in place...

Thanks to all for the great ideas.  I'll probably go the way of Screwposts on this CP.  But I really like the idea given by TotallyOut2Lunch.  That would really look nice with the right edging around the Lexan.  Maybe for my next CP.
