Title: Red Dwarf: Name that cab. Screencap.
Post by: SpamMe on July 18, 2004, 06:14:21 am
Any ideas? This is about the best cap I could find (actually a series of about 10 frames stacked).

Maybe it was just made for movies?

The shape of the side looks very similar to a Nintendo VS. or Donkey Kong/Mario Bros/DKJr or a Mario Bros widebody...

unlikely. british television is very good at keeping costs down. hardly likely they would have had one built especially, even if it featured heavily. it could be though that what they procurred at a bargain price was someones mame machine...

Doesn't look like the most common, but perhaps a generic jamma cab of some sort - they are very common and cheap in the UK...

I agree, there's no way they would have made it just for the show (I don't think I've ever seen that episode, will have to take a look for it).

Seeing as how real video doesn't film well, there is an excellent chance it's not real.  I could easily see that 'video' screen just being a picture with backlighting.

It's probably just some generic cabaret cab that was faked out for the set.  If you look around the Red Dwarf sets you see a LOT of random items stuck on walls, in corners, etc.

It is definitely video of some sort.  I have series 1, 2 and 3 on DVD and watched all 3 on the weekend (new baby in the house so no sleeping) and noticed this machine in the first 4 episodes of season 2.  It seems to have been a permenant part of the set until they again changed the set from the 5th episode.  When I step through the frames the screen definitely has scanlines of some sort.  I did capture a decent pic of the sideart as well which I'll post shortly.

The series 1 set was very sparse and they sort of dressed it up (or down would be a better description) for series 2.  They seem to have received some money in the budget for series 3 because everything got replaced in series 3.

Here's some pics captured from the DVD.  They had another 2 machines in the disco on board as well.  One looks like a stand up Afterburner or something simiar.  Didn't bother with a picture of the other one as it only appeared in a deleted scene:

Here's the flight stick.

Actually, it is Afterburner but with different artwork.  Here's the Afterburner image from KLOV.
