Title: Wrist rest area?
Post by: Tahnok on July 16, 2004, 04:59:09 pm
I am working on a portable CP and was wondering how much area should be below the controls to rest your wrist on. It seems like it would be hard to play games if you couldn't rest your wrist, but space is at a premium. Thanks! :)

What type of games will you be playing? You really don't need much (or any) space if you're playing fast-paced games that requiring lots of tapping. It's all relative and subjective, though.

A lot of old 80s games (Ms Pacman, Frogger, Lunar Lander, etc) although my friends like to play fighter games.

The distance for joysticks will vary depending on how you hold the stick for a particular game.
For the above mentioned games, I don't need ANY for the joystick.
I hold the stick with my middle finger on the left, my index finger over the top, and my thumb on the right.

For button games, like Asteroids, I need at least 6-1/2" from the center of the buttons for it to feel comfortable.
Any less than that, and it gets uncomfortable holding my hands up the entire time.

If you are standing up, you can just tap the buttons and you don't need any rest area. But if you are sitting down and playing your arms will be at a lower angle, you will need alot of room for your wrists to rest.

My first control panel had little rest area and it became painful to play and annoying to feel the edge of the panel. My current panel has 7 inches of rest area, which gives me enough room to rest the wrists and play comfortably.

you could make retractable wrist rests that slide in/out - or flip out..ect.
