Title: Who HASN'T put Plexiglass over their vinyl artwork?
Post by: Sylentwulf on July 13, 2004, 08:20:19 pm
I'm not planning on, and don't want to put plexi over my artwork. I had the vinyl CPO done by Mamemarquees, and unless I really SHOULD put plexi over it, I'd prefer not to.

So, how about 10 or so posts from people saying "I don't have plexi on my vinyl CPO and it's been fine for years!"
That would make me feel a lot better/safer.

I haven't put plexi over my CPO and it's been fine for days (I just recently got it).

If you think about it, arcade games didn't have plexiglass on the control panels. That practice only became common later on, when conversions became more common place, and the reason operators did that was mostly to prevent cigarette burns. So, unless you're a careless smoker, you should be fine.

Plexi is a great way to cover paper art.  If my art was printed on good vinyl, no way would I put plexi over it...

First post - Sorry to wake the old thread but i am wondering.
If u guys suggest not to use the plexi over vinyl artwork, and i agree to it, what would be the finish on which i should apply the vinyl ?
I am building with MDF - and so far have used primer and sealent in one, put 2 qoute on it.
Is this good enough to put vinyl,, or should i get Glossy Spray paint and paint before putting the artwork ?

I have done two CPOs without plexi over them, one on mdf and one on metal.
Both were from Gameongrafix and both have been plenty durable.

I don't have plexi over my c/p overlay.

it doesn't need it ,gameongraphics use a very durable scratch resistant vinyl

I asked this question on another forum recently - although my CP is metal. I'm assured the CPO with go straight onto primed surface fine, although one person preferred applying a gloss coat of paint, first.

And personally, I wouldn't put plexi over a CPO.

I just seal the edges with two coats of 50% PVA/water and sand it smooth. My vinyl sticks to that fine.

Plexi was for conversions.  Don't be afraid of bumps and bruises.  We are not building museum pieces.

I used GameOnGraphix's polycarbonate laminated prints on my CP with no plexi.  Has a really nice finish, but the material is thick enough that you can't fold the material over the edges of your CP and tack the T-molding over it.  As a result, there's an exposed cut edge all the way around my CP art that runs the risk of accidentally getting peeled up.

If I had another chance, I'd cut the T-molding slot just slightly closer to the edge where I stuck the CP overlay, so the T-molding did a better job of protecting that edge.  Or maybe just print on regular vinyl, and fold the edges under the T-molding.

You will have the same problem if you have a bezel printed.  Anywhere there is an exposed edge you need to protect it or the laminate will eventually peel back.

I just finished my build a couple of months ago, no plexi and vinyl overlay seems to be holding up fine.

I used gameongraphics vinyl c/p adhesive overlay and I managed to fold mine over the edges and use the t-moulding to hold in place

I used Game on Grafix for my CPO and it still looks as good as the day I applied it a year ago.

BUT having said that, I truly believe that plexi glass over an arcade control panel looks absolutely sleek. More work but I think it's worth it in the end....that being said I haven't done it haha so easy for me to say.

For restorations, I think it depends on the game and if the original had it, myself. For custom builds, do what you want.
