My trusty 27" monitor has been excellent in for the past two years in my mame machine. Last weekend, however, the signal went away during a game of moon patrol and now there's a popping sound coming from the back of it.
Anyone heard of this before? Sounds pretty serious...
Thanks for any ideas...

Probably a short in the flyback.
Take the center spindle out of a roll of paper towels, then with your head carefully away from bad things like the tube neck and the neckboard, point the spindle towards various spots on the chassis listening to see where it is the loudest. I'm betting it is in the flyback.
Does the picture ever appear, with just a snap shrinking the size and back, or is it a dead screen but with snapping?
If it appears, you may be able to temporarily fix things by jamming a toothpick or two into the top of the flyback (with it off obviously) to keep the core centered. But that is normally more of a small crackle than a loud snap.
Good luck

It would help to know the make and model of the monitor.

did you see any blue sparks comming off the back of it?
Sometimes the flyback gets cracked and it comes from the top of it near the wire or on the body.
Sometimes it comes from the anode wire at the top.
Either one needs a new flyback.
Take the back off of it and then look at it. Turn it on and see if you see sparks.
It makes a loud buzzing popping noise when it shoots those 20K volts into the air.
When you see that, witness why we ground these things.

Thanks for the responses. I'll check out the "flyback" on the monitor. If I have to get it replaced, is that a pretty big deal ($$$ wise)?
It's an 27" Eygo Monitor. I'll get the model number and post here tonight.

Could be bad solder joints on the monitors main board, probably at the yoke connector pins, width coil, or any of the large white resistors. Also look for bad solder on the flyback pins.
