Title: High demand games like KI, work with Arcade VGA no slowdown?
Post by: sfetaz on July 11, 2004, 11:38:19 am
I want to be able to play games like Killer Instinct 1 and 2 and all the other CHD based games in mame.  As well, I would like to use other emulators that may require a high end graphics card.  Will Arcade VGA allow me to do this no problems at all, assuming the PC itself is well equiped?

If not, what can I use to down convert the signal from say a Geforce FX 5600 Card to 15khz?

As in amost all MAME games, the 3D acceleration of your video card has nothing to do with dramatic changes in framerates of games. The Radeon 7000 which the AVGA is based off of is MORE than sufficient for all MAME, and most other emulated games.

The question comes in when you want to run more PC based games that may take advantage of a better 3D card. It also depends on what the final display is. If it's a monitor/TV with low resolutions, even smaller 3D cards can run full speed.

To run demand games like KI, a faster processor/MB combo is the better way to go. I have a AMD 3200+ XP @400 FSB and it runs it full framerate. Get the computer to suit your budget.

I would be using a P4 Prescott 2.8 ghz with 1 meg Cache and Hyperthreading, 256 megs of PC3200 DDR Ram and Serial ATA Hard drive.

If anything in that configuration is too much, please advise as I could save some money obviously.

Only thing I haven't decided on is whether I should use Windows 98 or Windows XP.

I would be wanting to run some PC games, so I was hoping to also find out other ways to get the video to work.

I would definately go for 512meg RAM, if neccessary drop the ghz to pay for it...

Personally I think that Direct X is better imbedded into XP than 98, so I think that Windows based games run better in it.  The problem you run into with XP is that some Dos programs won't run, or at best won't run correctly on it, and I'm not sure if you can run Dos as a second operating system from the boot menu or not.  Someone with more knowledge on that could tell you.  I do know you could always just load both operating systems, 98 and XP,  if you're going to have a keyboard handy on your machine to switch between them at startup that is.You know what they say, sometimes the best answer to an argument is to compromise by doing both choices.

Another thing with playing PC games on a top of the line video card is to get the best quality.  Since that quality is already going to be hindered by the Arcade monitor as opposed to the PC monitor, all you have to do is start turning settings down and a lot games should be playable with a Radeon 7000.

Its easy to set up a dual boot of windows 98 and windows xp, although I don't know if I ever will use Dos.  I am a long time and dedicated user of Mame32.  The direct x point is very good thing to consider.

I actually just remembered I already have a stick of PC3200 256 megs of Geil Ram, so I can get another stick no problem, so 512will be fine.
