I want to use clrMAME to build a v0.36 Romset from my v0.84 Romset. Version 0.36 requires samples for some game sounds that are no longer available. I've searched the net and haven't been able to find these samples.
My question is:
Can clrMAME build the samples from the v0.84 Roms that now have the sounds as part of the ROM image, or am I SOL with getting samples for older MAME versions?
It seems sad that these are no longer available when the idea of MAME seems to be preservation.
If the sample files can't be rebuilt, does anyone know where I might be able to get them?
Thanks to anyone that can help!

They *have* been preserved. They are no longer needed, because Mame creates the sounds natively.
Which samples do you not have? IIRC I have a complete set.

I stand corrected; I just scanned my .36 set and am missing quite a few samples.

I've been looking this up (lemme guess, most of what you're missing is '10.wav' in the invaders sets?)
Likely you could patch the source so you wouldn't even need this anymore. I've been looking myself, since you've asked. I'm sure it's out there somewhere, but since it hasn't been needed since about .37bsomething, it may be really hard to find.
You could ask someone in alt.binaries.emulator.mame for it. Likely you'd get it in an hour or less.

All right, I'm almost complete. The only thing I'm missing now is 10.wav from the invaders sample set.
Get missing ones here:

And *finally* here is 10.wav from invaders.zip

Thanks Peale. I got all the files from the links you posted. I haven't gone through the process of building the ROM set yet (been a busy weekend). I wasn't about to begin that until I understood if clrMAME took and rebuilt the files AND sound samples to the old set.
I didn't see a Phoenix sound sample in the lists. Phoenix was one of my favorite games, and a lot of discussion I've seen relates to sound samples prior to being integrated into the ROM after somewhere around version 0.37 (I might be a little off on my version number since I'm going from memory). A lot of Phoenix "purists" prefer the sound prior to the integration. Hence my reason to go with an older version of MAME for classic games for an older system I have.....not that I'm one of those purists....
I guess until I build the set I won't know what I'm really missing without doing a little more investigation.
Are you using clrMAME to check what samples are missing? I'm just interested in knowing what you're using to check.
Thanks for the help so far. Such a great community!

Yes, I used ClrMAME to check. Invaders' "10.wav" was the biggest one on the list, so the inclusion of this file knocked the list from like 40 down to five or so.

Can I ask what dat file you're using? Is it the dat file for v0.36 and does that include support for sample files? Or are you using a seperate file for just for samples. On this topic, where did you pick up you're dat file?
-
Made it myself.
C:\MAME> mame -listinfo > mame36.dat
-
Doh, didn't think about that method for generating the list.
Okay, so thanks to you I've got a great start on the samples. Just out of curiosity, since you've already generated the list, what handful of sound samples are missing...if you don't mind me asking. Given the list, I can begin the tireless search for those files and maybe add to the archive.
Thanks Peale!

Wa'nt hard, 10.wav from invaders was the biggie. The other two sites I referenced above should fill in the rest.
