Title: Pictures in MAME
Post by: Ed ONeill on July 09, 2004, 09:54:20 am
Ok I was thinking since I live within 5 mile of the worlds second largest arcade which btw has the most classic games

I was thinking of adding the pictures to mame however how would I convert a jpeg to a PNG file?

Also I just noticed that I have some of the cab pictures however  I can't get them to display any suggestions?

Thanks in advance
Ed

What do you mean adding pictures to mame?

I assume he wants the cab pictures to be shown when the game is selected.

I'm not sure if this is always the case but for Mame32 they should go in the C:\Mame\Cabinets folder, but maybe you can configure this somewhere as well. You can also have pictures of the flyers, marquees (in folders named like that).

Download GIMP or Paint Shop pro.
Load the Jpeg.
Save as PNG.

I'm not really sure what you mean either. You can't really load pictures into MAME.

I'm assuming you mean you want to load them into your front end, such as Mame32 or MameWah.  To do that, take the pictures, convert them like RayB said, then put them into the cabinet folder in your MAME directory.  Then set up MAME32 as was stated or for MameWah you need to point an artwork field to the cabinet folder.  It will then show up on your layout assuming there is a spot in the layout for the pictures.

If you're running Windows XP, then MS Paint has support for png. Open jpg, go file ->  save as..., and pick the type as png. Not sure which version of paint first had png support added.

Getting them to display is dependent on whichever front end you use. Any documentation on its homepage or included files should tell you what you need to know.

Another suggestion for a bitmap conversion program would be IrfanView (http://www.irfanview.com/). It's free and pretty good for converting stuff.

FWIW MAMEWAH & many other cab FE's support jpegs (& gifs etc.) anyway...

What arcade is it you're talking about?

pointdablame ...what do youu mean you can't load picctures into MAME? The other pictures  got there somehow

Alright sorry I wasn't too clear guys

What I want to do is help the MAME community by taking missing cab/control panel pictures at FUNSPOT and then adding them to the cab and control panel files in mame32.

Thanks to those of you who gave info on converting jpeg

BTW I just noticed I can't see any of the  cab pictures in mame32?

There's a difference between mame32 and mame :)  That's why I was confused too.

there are many free image conversion utilities out there.  You can get GIMP, a little overkill, but works.  You can probably find something at www.downloads.com or www.tucows.com.

yeah, see... mame32 is a whole 'nother animal ;)

Mame32 is basically a front end when all else is said.  It's just a windows style GUI for mame.  You can't load marquee, cab, etc pictures into MAME.... mame just emulates the arcade game.  You CAN however load pictures in a frontend that supports it, such as Mame32, MameWah, and the countless others.

Did you put them in a cabinets directory right under the mame directory? Aparently they have to be PNG. I tried JPG in mame32 and mame32plus, but unfortunately that doesn't work. That's weird because with JPG you could have much better pictures (larger) than with PNG in the same filesize. But then I have an "older version" (0.79).

Irfanview ROCKS!  For your personal use, you can do a batch conversion and it will take ALL your .jpg files and save them in a different directory with the same file name as .png files, with a single mouse click.

I think getting the pictures is a great idea.  To help the community, I would contact the maintainers and send the raw .jpg files to them so they can clean them up (remove backgrounds, etc.) or you can clean them up also (but save the originals).

I could help clean them also.

Here's the contact names:

Marquees - http://emam.mameworld.net/ E-mail Eldio from the www.mameworld.net contacts page.
Control Panels - http://www.mamehot.net/php/stuff.php?stuff=panel Contact Smitdogg on the mameworld forums (or mametesters), although I think someone else is maintaining them.
Cabinets - Someone really needs to create a high quality archive of these.  I did it for about 40 games.  JohnIV did some at http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32qa/down.htm (downloads don't work for me, nice job except they're limited to about 350 pixels max) and there are some from arcadeunlimited at http://www.mamehot.net/php/stuff.php?stuff=cabinet

Thanks Tiger Heli,

I'll start looking to see what pictures are missing?

Anything particular I should start with

Don't forget that the pictures have to use the correct filename that MAME32 will look for for each game...
