Title: Restoring an old cab, need advice please!
Post by: smallzfsu on July 08, 2004, 12:03:05 am
Hello all, I just recently acquired a Space Invaders Deluxe Cabinet, with no PCB in it.  I am going to attempt to restore it to its original glory, but I want to know if there is anything I should know first befor I do anything.  It has sat in a barn for the past 14 years or so, and oviously is pretty old.  I dont believe its been fired up in all that time.  What should I do before I plug it in, is there some things that should be replaced regardless of their condition?  Please help me a I dont ant to screw this thing up.  Thanks!

Inspect the following very carefully with a strong worklight:

Look for mouse eaten wiring

Look for corroded fuseholders

look for corroded/rusted power transformers

Check the pins inside each and every connector housing for any that are corroded/tarnished/broken

Remove the monitor and inspect component side of it's main board for obvious broken/corroded components then flip the board over and inspect the solder joints on the foil side. Resolder any bad joints. Install a capkit while the monitor is out of the cabinet.

Check the power supply board diodes and filter capacitors. Resolder the connector pins on the foil side of the board.

Check the black light fixture for a shorted ballast. While you have the fixture out and if the ballast is ok replace the black light tube and starter with new ones.
