Title: could this be the monitor?
Post by: talem on July 07, 2004, 02:24:08 pm
i had no idea where to put this so i ended up putting it here, i recently say a Operation WOlf for sale and asked the guy what was wrong, he said
" The game is actually in pretty fair shape for an ex arcade stand up. The main problem is that the shots will not register along the far left hand side of the screen or along the very top. Also, the sound will sometimes get crunchy. I have the feeling that someone who has experence with arcade game matinance and repair should be able to have her up and running as it should without too much trouble."

so what do you guys think it it?

Operation Wolf uses a positional gun, meaning it's basically an analog joystick with a gun attached to the top.  Therefore, it does not have optics and it does not "look" at the monitor.

The problem is elsewhere.

Broken wire or bad connectors in/going to the guns. Possibly a problem on the game board.

My operation wolf has a optical gun.

Crank up the brightness and see if it helps.
To get mine to work, I disassembled the gun and cleaned the lens and the optical sensor and also had to adjust to brightness and contrast way up. (To the point I see a little bit of raster retrace.)

Gun works fine now.

For the sound, mine does that also, no clue how to fix that yet.

Always clean the face of the picture tube on the monitor and BOTH sides of that mirror.

Mine had the same problems.. If the gun is working on part of the screen then it's good. The trouble is seeing the raster near the edges.
To the gun it has to be brighter. So after you get it just clean everything and up the brightness.
(The mech attack I worked on, the gun stopped working at all, I spent a week trying to figure out why, finally just reached around back and upped the brightness and instant fix... I felt like an idiot!.)

I guess I stand corrected.

I honestly had no idea that there were optical versions too...  Or was there no positional verson?  :-\

There is definately a positional version, I've seen the gearing mechanisms and the POTs attached to the base of the guns myself.
