Title: Happ's bezel -- arrived CRACKED!
Post by: sofakng on July 06, 2004, 10:35:16 pm
Just wondering, did anybody else order a bezel from Happ's and when they received it, it already had a crack in it?

My 27" bezel arrived today in a very flimsy cardboard box.  They didn't pack it with ANY other packing material what-so-ever.  So... low and behold there a huge crack in the plastic.  Of course the crack is in the MIDDLE right where it would be visible.

Did anybody else have this problem?  They shipped it via UPS.  When I call them for an exchange tomorrow, should I ask them to ship it with a different carrier?

My overall experience with Happs has been very good, but...

The first bezel I ever ordered from them (also a 27") arrived completely torn in half.  What had obviously happened was that it was in the flimsy packing, as you mentioned, and something else got thrown on top of it crushing it.  I called them and they immediately sent me another (the same day).  The second one was a little dented, but not so much that is was a problem (I popped the dent back into place).  I ended up using that bezel.

A little later I ordered a third 27" bezel, and it arrived in perfect shape.  I just (two weeks ago) ordered a 19" bezel from them, and it arrived in perfect shape as well.  Interestingly, the 19" bezel came in a very sturdy packaging (don't know why the 27" ones aren't like that).

All I can tell you is that they will do their best to make it right.  But I said the same thing that you said, "can you package it better, or send it through a shipper that won't crush it?"  In the end it ends up being luck-of-the-draw on that one.  I just ordered a bunch of vinyl from them, and the first 5 feet was useless (had been torn up in packing/shipping).  The good news, like I said, is that they're pretty good about making it right.  And they're so co-operative and responsive on everything that I can forgive the fact that they can't seem to ship bezels and vinyl perfectly every time.  Still way better than dealing with Wico.

UPS has a secret rule all employees follow but no one speaks: You must throw, kick, jump on, and abust packages in every way imaginable.

My 25" happs bezel came cracked too, just in one of the corners. I didn't want to go through the trouble of sending it back so I just electrical taped it up : (

I guess I was lucky.  Mine 27" bezel arrived in perfect condition.  I am sure it was packaged in the same manner, and can see how it could easily be crushed.

Shipping was definitely expensive, but not killer...

They charged me $12.60 for shipping and the bezel was $17.79.

Definitely expensive, but as long as my next one arrives safely I will be happy.

Wow, $56 for shipping!!  That's insane!

Spystyle is right, you should always call them and ask for cheaper shipping (eg. USPS Priority Mail).  I just ordered the marquee retainer and got USPS shipping (I'll let you know the price later today when it's posted).

Regarding my bezel, I just got off the phone with Happ's.  I had to wait 20 minutes to speak to the sales department (a little long, but not bad) and I spoke to that same friendly lady that I usually speak with.

She told me to trash my bezel and not worry about sending it back to them.  She is GREAT to deal with.  I really feel like getting her name and writing a nice letter to the company.  Also speaking of good customer service, a weeks ago I spoke with my regional sales associate (Todd <something>) and he was also VERY helpful and friendly.

Not that I'm defending UPS, but I used to work for them one summer long ago.  The job consists of basically continually loading and unloading of trucks as fast as you can.  This does mean that sometimes packages get damaged (though not necessarily intentionally).  I honestly didn't have time to treat every package with the care that it would take to make sure it's poorly packaged contents would arrive safely.   I did however try to make sure the heavier packages didn't land on the smaller ones.

Again, not defending UPS, just making a comment

I remember when I lived in Columbia, MO, I watched a UPS truck driving down the street with its back door flapping open, streaming packages all over the road... the driver finally stopped a couple of blocks later.  Many of the packages had been crushed by traffic at that point...

I've had far better luck with USPS shipping than UPS these days.  They seem to know they need to be better than UPS to keep from losing more business to them...

I had a 19" bezel arrive cracked one time...they said they never heard of this before.  Funny ;D
Has anyone else noticed the following (see pic) about the 27" bezel lately.  Would be fine i suppose for a horizontal monitor, just put the thick part on the bottom or whatever but it seems like it would look non symmetric for a vertical monitor (not many people using 27" monitor vertical though I suppose)  They all seem to be like this right now although one I ordered a few months ago is not like that.

That part is supposed to be trimmed to fit anyway, isn't it?

No, the outside is trimmed to fit.  The inside is precut to fit the appropriate size monitor.  Looks like the bezel was formed/shaped off center and the opening was cut on center.

Ok, my marquee retainer shipped today.  Included in the package was 4 buttons as well.

Total shipping charge:  $8.75

Definitely beats paying $30!

As I mentioned, I'm in Pennsylvania so I'd guess that the shipping might cost slightly more the further you are...

EDIT:  I've just checked USPS.GOV and they estimate 2 days transit time from Addison, IL to Scranton, PA.  UPS ground took around 4 days.  So not only is USPS cheaper but it's also TWICE as fast (for me).
