Title: NE1 find any low budget black LED Holders.
Post by: Tiger-Heli on August 15, 2002, 07:22:46 am
I am currently planning to use these LED holders for the flashing LED's above the start buttons:  http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F010%5F012%5F010%5F000&product%5Fid=276%2D080

Digi-key doesn't have anything comparable.

These have the look I want, but I would prefer them in black.  Has NE1 seen them (or sth similar) in black elsewhere?

An option would be to paint or powder coat them, but being chrome, I think paint might flake off.  NE1 recommend someone who does powder coating in the Atlanta GA area and know approximately what it would cost to coat these?

I haven't personally looked for myself, but I would check Radio Shack if I were you. Try that parts section in the back that even the employees are afraid of. You'll find all kinds of neat stuff back there. I used black plastic LED holders from them for a project a few years back, but they weren't anything fancy. You may want to check it out.

(Don't expect to be able to ask the employees for help.)

I bought these and painted them (w/the dark rustoleum hammered metal paint) for a remote control panel for my pc.  They are holding up just fine.  The only prep I did was to scuff them slightly w/some 120 grit paper.
the 'shack' also sells black holders but not in this cone shape (that's why I went with the painted look)

FWIW a little primer wouldn't hurt either (like bins or killz) if you go the painting the chrome look.

All Electronics (http://www.allelectronics.com) does have some LED Holders (http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=340400&type=store).  The  HLED-3 is about 3/8" across and is like a low volcano with some of the led sticking up beyond the black "cone".
