Title: Stargate CP with some modifications
Post by: skorch on July 03, 2004, 12:32:55 pm
Hey all.

Haven't posted in a while, had to put cab plans on hold.
I am however in the planning stages of a CP and need some advice.

Basically my design will be a Stargate controller with a 4-way insted of a 2-way, and on the opposite CP side a trackball.
I can't seem to find anything in these forums about mounting a Ms. Pac/Galaga reunion stick, so it must be a royal pain to mount in a wood panel?
If it's too much of a hassle then I will go with a Wico 4-way (hopefully easier to mount in wood?).

Any help is much appreciated.

It's more work than other sticks, but it sure is doable. See this thread: Mounting Happ Galaga/Pac 4-way in Wood Panel? (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=15074;start=0#msg117819)

You could of course also use the mounting plate.

If you are going with the Stargate theme the use the Ms. Pac reunion stick, as it is closer in ball size and height to the Stargate stick than the WIco 4-way is.

Thanks so much for those links, guess I couldn't find them cause I was typing Ms. Pac/Galaga reunion.

I'm going to order from Bob Roberts when I figure out which buttons to order, any suggestions for those?

Stargate panels had leaf buttons, order leaf buttons. Get the original colors while you are at it. I have a Stargate panel kicking around in my basement, I could check the button colors for you, although you could probably look it up faster than waiting for the two weeks inbetween now and the next time I will have net access.

A problem with the MsPac/Galaga stick might be the reverse button. The reverse button needs to be really close to the stick and I'm not sure if the MsPac/Galaga stick will allow for that. See the thread: Reverse Button for Defender/Stargate? (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=19403) (there is also a link to Paige's solution using a Wico stick)

Personally, I'm thinking about ordering a repro stargate stick from arcadeshop. It costs a lot, but I don't really care about that too much. I have read from members who say the defender stick is "crap" and that worries me more.

paigeoliver, thanks for the help.

patrickl, as far as the distance of the reverse button, I'm going to just try to get it as close as possible, without modification. Since I'll be using a 4-way I'll probably just map the left-right as reverse anyway, like I do now with the beloved gamepad  :P.

You want the ultimate Stargate control panel ?

Check out the Multi-Williams CP, it has 2 8-way joysticks and the button/stick layout for Stargate, it's compatible with all the Williams games (Stagate,Joust 2 player,Robotron, ect) and I estimate the layout is compatible with over 1,000 MAME roms (due to the 8-way sticks)

The Multi-Willaims CPO can be found here (printable) :

It's a lovely overlay for Williams fans, and compatible with so many ROMs it's certainly something to consider.

If you don't like that and still want to use the Stargate overlay you can mount a regular joystick in the Stargate CP (with 3 of 4 bolts in place) and use a 1 1/8" hole-saw to drill the reverse button hole, it will take out some of the joystick's base but leaves a functional stick (that mounts with 3 bolts)

(that's what Paige did, he's so cool, to honor him I installed a spinner on James Brown)

I personally used an original 2-way Defender stick on a Stargate CPO, the joystick is super slim, which is how they got the reverse button that close. However the control panel is only compatible with hand-full of MAME roms due to the 2-way (verticle) stick.

Can you dig it ?
