Title: microsoft funnies
Post by: danny_galaga on July 03, 2004, 11:48:18 am
well, ive finally reformatted my hard drive. waited a month for the os (post office had it for 3 weeks but didnt bother telling me). for the last three months my computer has been switching itself off and on whenever it feels. i was so sure i had some sort of virus or os problem so i got a genuine os to fix it. a tech guy told me today that my prob was more than likely caused by a faulty internal modem. so ive binned the useless piece of crap and all seems to be well. it really sucks that machines dont even last 4 months before something goes wrong with it. im just thankful hp dont make aircraft. i dont think ive wasted money though because its nice to be able to reformat when you want.
so whats the point of my story? well, for so long i wanted to blame microsoft for my problems and now its turned out not to be the case. but i still love to hate them! more fun than hating hp. its like when i learnt that dubya really DID learn to fly (and f104 jets at that) i still prefered to think of him as a moron  :D . so heres a pic i found a while ago. feel free to contribute something in the same vein!

I agree on hating M$ and HP...

I've got 3 HP's that run on Win 98 and one on XP. One Win 98 system is currently an active MAME with the other 2 as future projects.. The XP system is my current internet PC, but once I get my custom PC built (next year most likely), then this one's going into the MAME system I currently have (since it plays NBA JAM better than the others).

With the majority of the problems I've had with HP, I'm never buying another of their systems....  Besides, I have SO much fun building my own  ;D

As for Micro$tiff, until Linux becomes a bit easier to use, I guess I'm stuck using Winblows....

sounds like hp pavillions are not the bees knees! mine keeps shutting down whenever, a tech guy told me that sometimes the internal modem dies and causes the problem. so i took it out and the pc worked fine for a day. then it started shutting down ever more than before, sometimes after only a second after its turned on  >:( . so for now ive found that each time it plays up, i reverse the action. ie: it starts shutting down on its own, pull out the modem. it starts doing it again, put the modem back in! i tell ya, five years from now you'll need a degree in psychology to work on computers, not a degree in computing!

Shuts down as in goes off or windows states "Shutting Down"?  It could be a faulty power source.  This computer I'm using had that happen where it would start and shut off in 1 second.  New PS fixed that.  BTW, my roommate's dad's HP has strange problems where "Out of Sync" would appear and then shuts down.  My advice: drag and drop your HP into the trash then build your own, it's surprisingly easy!

yeah, it was the power supply! got it fixed under warranty. bit scarey because i put in a second hard drive and wasnt sure if they would honour the warranty or not even though THEIR instruction book shows you how to do it!
and yes, i have built a pc before and this time i thought 'lets treat ourselves to something new'. when i got the new computer home, the book noted that the pc may be comprised of new and remanufactured parts!! so much for new!! and i bet the power supply was one of the second hand parts...
next computer i will again build myself so i know what goes in it...
