Title: Space Gun - Positional or Optical?
Post by: dxvyper on July 02, 2004, 07:35:58 pm
Anybody know whether Space Gun used positional or optical guns? KLOV.com says it uses positional, but it also says that about Op Wolf, whcih is actually optical.

Thanks for your help.

I have 2 guns from Space Gun and they use pots (positional) just like a Terminator gun.  I also have 2 Operation Thunderbolt guns and they  too are not optical.  I don't have an Operation Wolf gun, but from the pictures it looks to be positional.  I think KLOV is correct.
btw:  I'm not using the Space Guns if anyone is interested in a trade.

Maybe we ought to start a list of which guns are positional and which are optical (unless someone has already done this :) ).

Other threads have discussed the fact that many of the guns that are mounted on the cabinet are in fact optical instead of positional. The only way I know to check is examine the gun itself, or open it up. Most optical guns have a sensor in the barrel, so you will see glass or clear plastic inside. Positional guns will have pots inside.

I have seen conflicting reports on Op Wolf, Op Thunderbolt, and others. Personally, I have cracked open a Mechanized Attack gun and confirmed that it was optical.

Anybody see any value in this?

That Mech Attack gun works PERFECT by the way! :)

Great! Glad to hear you could make use of it.

I just cracked open one of my Op Thunderbolt guns and it has 2 pots and no optics in the nozzle.  Definitely positional.

I received several messages asking me to confirm that my guns are positional.  Enclosed is a photo showing the Op Thunderbolt and Space Guns with the base covers removed.  I've marked the pots so you can clearly see they are positional.

How many people here have hooked up positional guns for MAME?  I know 1UP had the T2 guns, but I'd be interested to hear how succesful this works...guess it depends a lot on the cab itself, and where the guns can be placed...

I'm not sure about positional guns, but the light guns work fine for positional gun games (t2 needs to be tweaked but is quite playable) and operation wolf kicks as --although it seems easier than it did in an arcade.  If you have a positional gun, the pots would wire through with analog+ mame as per normal or use the aki interface.

Operation Wolf is optical, took me forever to clean all the optics on mine. (You have to crank up the brightness on the monitor. I should just get a new monitor for it eventually)

Also I've worked on a mech attach and it's very, very similar gun design to operation wolf (Maybe a little stealing of ideas there).

Later,

I realise how to hook them up...regular MAME would work too I guess, just wondered how feasible it is in practice to get the guns to 'line up' physically with the position on screen.
