Title: List of best settings for trackball/spinner games?
Post by: Apollo on July 02, 2004, 06:42:54 pm
Is there a list of recommended settings for all  (or most) of the trackball/spinner games. I'm at the stage where I'm going through each game adjusting sensitivity etc and was wondering if anyone had ever made a list?
Cheers

Hate to bump this, not really my style but don't you think that this would be very handy. I'd do it myself but I know it's very subjective. However wouldn't it be great to have somewhere to start from?

If it hasn't been done already may be someone could name all the most popular spinner/trackball games and I'll do it myself?

Cheers

i always adjust key/joy speed to 1% to eliminate any backspin. and then I adjust sensitivity until i get the best feel.

It's not really possible to give a list of "best" settings. Spinners have different encoder wheels and wil need different values to calibrate right.

Isn't key/joy speed just used for how the joystick or movement keys emulate a trackball/spinner?  That shouldn't have any effect on backspin or how your trackball/spinner behaves, assuming you're not pushing the joystick or movement keys at the same time.  Or is there something I'm missing?

There are too many variables to have a one-setting-fits-all list.

As mentioned, the number of teeth on the encoder wheel, the sensitivity of the mouse/interface it is hacked too, and even your OS/MAME version/etc... will all have an effect on the setting in MAME.

Your best bet is to find a setting that seems close for "most" games, and then put that into the general preferences.
If you find a game that doesn't feel quite right, you can then adjust on a game-by-game basis.

"Supposed to" is different from "is".  :-\

I don't know how, and I've been wondering about this on for years, but the key/joy speed does have some effect on mouse input.  Not very much, but enough to sometimes make a difference between backspin or not.

I'm also wondering about settings for my spinner and trackball... (last night I finally got them both hooked up)

Here is what I'm using:

Happ's 3" Golden Tee Trackball
Oscar Control's Vortex Spinner
OPTI-PAC.

Oscar's site suggests settings for Arkanoid but he doesn't suggest settings for any other games with the Vortex spinner.

Anybody have any suggestions for me?

Also, should I configure all my spinner/trackball games with the same settings or should I configure them seperately?  If so, how do I configure them seperately?  Whenever I change "Analog Controls" from the MAME options menu it doesn't seem to save.
