Title: project for hire
Post by: Bspill1 on June 30, 2004, 10:11:12 pm
does anyone have a recommendation on who to go to for some custom game control work?

I am not lazy I swear.  I was injured racing downhill mountain bikes last year and left a quadriplegic.

I know exactly what I want.  I am only looking to convert a PlayStation controller.

thank you in advance for any help you have to offer

I, by no means, intend to offend you in any way, but... I'm wondering what you want such a thing for if you are quadraplegic?  I'm not a doctor, but the last time I checked that meant not having the use of arms or legs.  :-\

If I did infact offend you in any way, I appologize a million times over.

luck,

ps, oh, you might contact snaaake around here, he was building console contollers and they looked pretty good,  check the projects section.

Yep, contact Snaake.  He does the best Playstation conversions on a regular basis.

As Nannuu said - Snaake - he has made quite a number of controllers for various people, in different styles and to suit their needs.

Thanks a lot guys. I will try to get ahold of Snaake.

I do have pretty good movement of my arms.  My biceps and shoulders are doing all the work.

....have you considered XArcade? The XArcade Solo is only $99. and includes a console adaptor of your choice.

I have 2 and love them.

Good luck. Hopefully this will be what you're looking for.

When you find someone to do this, make sure they post details to use as reference for similar projects.

Pics of you actually using it would be great.

Thanks everyone for your interest.  I can't wait to play some games again.

I will give you an idea what I'm looking to do.  The controller will be in two parts.

The first part will only hold the PS2 controller guts.  Green computer board with all buttons wired out to barrier strip. This is the part that I need help with.

The second part would be the control panel.  This panel would be as flat as possible in order to mount on my wheelchair arm rests.  I will be using a joystick, toggle switches, and a couple of buttons for all of the right hand actions.  I cannot feel when I am pressing a button so a joystick seem to make more sense.  Each direction will be a different button. Then I never have to take my hand off.  I want to use toggle switches for buttons that need to be held constantly.  Like the accelerator in a racing game.  I even have a small button I want to use in my mouth with my tongue.

I have a couple of ultimate joysticks and arcade buttons already.  I believe they have .187 Mail connectors on the bottom.  All buttons and switches that do not have .187 Mail connectors will have them attached with a short lead.  This makes the controller adaptable for different game setups.

I hope I covered all.  Please let me know what you think.  Sorry for the typos.  I use a voice-activated program.

While I can't be of much help (I don't know how to do what you're asking), I do want to offer you my condolences.  My brother raced in motocross for several years but thankful he never suffered any major injuries.

I wish you and your family the best.

Regarding SNAAAKE he did a control panel overlay for me and it came out very nice.  While I can't attest to his craftsmenship of PSX controllers, he is a good guy to deal with.

Bill, here's another one you might try:

He's built a prototype psx controller, although he says he is not producing them right now, most people IMHO into this hobby are pretty cool, I bet if you contacted Dave, you could work something out with him.

luck,

Knowing the folks around here you probably already have found someone willing to help.  If you haven't found someone yet let me know.  I'd be happy to assist.

Ideally you'd want to go wireless as well.
Do they make wireless controllers for Playstation? (like Nintendo's Wavebird)

Yes, and no.  IIRC, there are wireless controllers for Playstation, but they're IR (line of sight) based, not RF based like the Wavebird.  I could be wrong though.

Actually there are some RF/900Mhz/2.4Ghz controllers out there for the PS2.  I have no idea what their quality is though.

I am not of any help either on this, but I did want to offer my sympathies and say that I truly hope you are able to get what you need.

That is great!  I did not think they had wireless RF controllers.  That would be much better.  The cable from the stock controller to the control panel could be much shorter that way.  Getting close to the television with the wheelchair can be tough.

I sent you an email.  If you still need someone to help just reply to the email and we can figure exactly what you are looking for and how best to accomplish it as that will probably be easier than posting back and forth here.

Just a few additional thoughts.  I think the wireless is a good idea.  The only thing is that it may limit you on functionality.  Given what you are trying to do I think it would be nice to start with a controller that has some ability to do turbo, etc to assist with playing some games.  That being said if one can't be found I think we can still wire up some circuits that would accomplish the same thing.
