Title: Happs Thumb Fire Joystick Installation Question?
Post by: woodman on June 30, 2004, 03:53:56 pm
Hi.  I am trying to install a Happs Thumb Fire Joystick to my control panel.  I have a 1-1/4" hole drilled and have to take the joystick apart to fit it to the panel.  I disassembled the entire base unit of the joystick, but cannot figure out how to remove the stick from the base.  I did remove the E-Ring but can't figure out how to remove the inner shaft that is attatched to the fire button.  Appreciate any advice  :)javascript:replaceText('%20:)')

Are you talking about the Top Firebutton Super?

If so, you need to remove the fire button switch, and the assembly that pushes on it--which it sounds like you did.
(Pay close attention to how it is put together, so you can get it BACK together when you need to).
Once that's out of the way, you need to pull on the bottom cap that presses the lever for the fire button off of the inner shaft.
If you look at the exploded view at Happs, it's a press fit onto the inner shaft.
You will probably feel like you're going to break it before it comes free.
A little twisting may help, but don't twist too much because the inner shaft is a piece of plastic.

The first time I disassembled mine, I finally hit the "if it breaks I'll buy another one" stage of frustration before it came free.
After you get it free the first time it's usually pretty easy because you won't put it back on as tightly as they did at the factory.

Yes that is the one!  I wil try what you say.  Thank you for your help and I will respond on my outcome.  I assume it goes back together just by pushing the bottom cap and shaft back in place?   :)

Yep.

Just be sure you get the flapper assembly back together properly before you put the switch back on the bottom.
It likes to fall out of the groove that it's supposed to anchor in while you're putting the switch back on.
