Yeah, thanks for the three month old news. ;)
Could prove interesting, using an older version of a character as a handicap (Since you'll have access to as many as 5 different versions of a character (from each incarnation of the game))
It'd be interesting to see them take this approach with other fighting franchises. Imagine Yoshimitsu from Tekken 1 against Yoshimitsu from Tekken 4. Or Shang Tsung from MK1 vs. Shang Tsung from (Well, MK:DA probably wouldn't work so well, 2d vs 3d).

That's already been done... remember Mortal Kombat Trilogy?

They had all the fighters from all the various Mortal Kombatii, in the MK4 engine, right? But did they have the different versions from the various incarnations of the game? i.e. the "old guy" Shang Tsung from MK 1, with his moveset and fatalities, and the "young" Shang Tsung from MKII?
Plenty of fighters have done "compliation" versions with all of the characters from all of the games(Tekken Tag, MK Trilogy, MK Gold), but this Street Fighter version has each incarnation of each fighter from each game in the series, along with the improvements to the engine and movelist. From the Press Release:
Concoct such matches as Ryu from the original Street Fighter II as he uses a rapid light kick while a second Ryu counters with a Super Combo from Street Fighter II Turbo

Actually it used the MK3 and/or UMK3 engine (I can't really tell the difference if there is one), therefore it was 2D. As such it contains those lame Animalities and Brutalities. And yes there were some fighters that had two different versions (i.e. Kano, Shang Tsung) to represent their different looks throughout the series.
BTW the above applies to the Playstation version. The N64 version left out a few 'classic' versions of the fighters.
Oh and according to the incompatability list that was released when the PS2 came out, MKT is one of the PS games that will not work on a PS2 (I haven't tested it so you're on your own there).
