Title: How much gap needed for cab door?
Post by: DaveMMR on June 30, 2004, 09:47:17 am
I have a 26" wide cabinet and I want the front to swing open.  Taking a piano hinge into account how much width should I lose on the front door (about)?  Thanks.

The saw kerf (missing wood after the saw cuts) should take care of it with almost no size reduction if you rout the side that will open so that only a small amount of the front is completely flat.
You shouldn't need to rout the top/bottom, and do NOT rout the hinge side or you won't have anywhere to mount the hinge.

You may need to trim the flat side next to the hinge slightly if the hinge is exceptionally wide, but the saw kerf should be enough.

Basically, you want the profile on the side that opens to look like this:

The piano hinge adds about 1/8" and I wanted about a 1/8" gap on the other side, so I took out about 1/4".

I then decided I wanted T-molding around it and so I took it down about another 1/8".
