I am considering buying the Pac-Man artwork that twobits sells. Looking at the photos they've been displaying in some recent ebay auctions, the colors don't look right to me. The t-molding is a little two bright, and the sideart colors look a little pale. I realize this may just be a photographic problem, so I'm wondering if anyone who has actually bought this artwork from twobits can tell me if they thought the colors were okay.
And yes, I realize that the original artwork was painted on. That's not what's at issue here at all. I know exactly what the twobits artwork looks like, and I know what it looks like on the machine. My only question is what someone who has seen it firsthand can tell me about the colors.

I'm not sure about the color, but I've noticed that one side of the art is reversed. the word "Pac-Man" is right, but the graphics are reversed with the twobits artwork.
-
Maybe not an exact answer, but I have a Galaga kickplate from TwoBit and I am unable to take a good picture of that one either (even my scanner seems to have trouble with it). For some reason the colors in the picture never look exactly like the ones in the artwork.
I guess it's a standard problem that (cheap) digital camera's are unable to capture color correct images.
The brightness of the picture also influences the colors. If the color is too pale, you can reduce the brightness and you'll often find the colors look closer to the original.

I recently bought the pacman cpo and glass bezel. (I didn't get the sideart b/c of its cost). I am very pleased with the artwork. The bezel did have some minor flaking around the edges, which I will touch up with black paint.
-
Yeah, I was thinking that the color way be off just because of the pic taken. Never bought from two bitz, so I don't know at all. BUYER BEWARE!
-
I ordered some today for my Pac project, so I'll post back with my impressions when I receive it.

Are you talking sideart? If so, duh! The graphics will be mirrored between one side of the cab and the other.
-
Pac wasn't mirrored, SirP. The same painting template was used on both sides. For example, Pac is looking towards the front of the cab on right, and looking at the back of the cab on the left on the original. On the twobit artwork, Pac looks towards the front of the cab on both sides.

I see what you mean about it being reversed. It's really a shame that twobits doesn't have the attention to detail that ArcadeRenovations has. For the prices they're charging, I expect it to be a VERY high quality! But maybe I've just been spoiled.

This is total speculation on my part, but I almost wonder if it's not intentional? That is obviously a pretty big detail to miss by accident, and the liscensee continues to offer it this way even though they must surely be aware of the discrepancy by now.
The reason I think that is because I've heard of restored Pac eBay auctions getting yanked because they had non-liscensed artwork installed and the auction was reported. How else would the liscense holder know if the artwork was not "legit" by a picture unless there was some way to easily identify it? Just a thought....
-
Yeah, I'm sure its intentional. TwoBits seems to be the type of company to do such a thing.
-
Does anyone know if they use real originals? Or did they just vectorize an original and use that for printing the repros?
I ask since my Galaga kickplate has several errors. I can hardly imagine that the original was done that poorly.
On the other hand, I saw the artwork on a Ms Pac/Galaga reunion cab and I was appalled at how incredibly poorly that looked. So apparently they do ship out "real" cabs with below par artwork too.
-
I think the name of the game back in the 80's was "mass production" and "get them out as fast as you can" rather than each peice be a showcase model as we tend to think of them now. My Ms Pac project cab is a good example. There are numerous spots on the sideart where the templates don't line up exactly right, overspray, etc... Even though my sideart is in very rough shape, in the below photo you can see where the yellow goes extends beyond the black outline in various places, and it just looks like a "crappy" job for lack of a better word. But that's how it was...
-
Are there any discrepancies in their Ms. Pac art like this?
Also, this definately makes the decision for me on whether to make my own stencils or just buy their decals for my Pac restorations.
-
You know what? I emailed two bits and asked them why it's backwards. We'll see what they say.
;-)

Well TwoBits replied and he was confused about what I was talking about. (In fact I was a little confused too because you guys misled me a bit ;) )
What I mean is, you gave me the impression that both sides of Pacman originally had the "swish" curved out towards the back of the cabinet. Truth is, one side is like that, and the other side is exactly the same (same stencils used).
So technically, TwoBits artwork is only "wrong" on one side.

That's exactly what OSCAR said (with pictures). Dunno how you were misled there, but it was not by "us guys" ::)

Ummm.... Just like I how I explained that the same painting template was used on both sides on the original and the two bit artwork is wrong on the left side? :)
I think this is more of a case of "misread" rather than "misled". ;D

In any case, it still doesn't answer the original question, which is "why did twobits chose to do it wrong on one side?"

I don't know, RayB was the one that emailed them to ask.

I know, the question was being asked in general, rather than being directed at you, Oscar. I merely quoted you to continue the flow of the discussion.
However, Oscar, did you get your artwork yet? Any verdict on the colors? If not, then when are you expecting it? I guess it hasn't been all that long yet (especially with the holidays slowing things down). Nevermind... (tries to wait patiently...)
-Jeff "etumor"

Oh, sorry about that, I thought your question was directed at me.
No, my sideart was supposed to show up today actually. According to the UPS website though, it has been rescheduled for tomorrow "due to train delay".
I'm going to take the sideart in to Home Depot and see if they can computer match the yellow, blue, and red in their Glidden paint line. Hopefully the vinyl won't be too shiny or glossy so they can get a good read off it. It may take me a couple days before I can get to HD, though.
-
OK I misread, and in the process of looking up pictures and trying to get TwoBit to understand what I meant, I thought you guys had said something otherwise. Sorry!

I received the Pac artwork today. I think it looks just fine, but it obviously looks like vector artwork rather than the original stenciled artwork, but that is what you are going to get with screen printed vinyl. Based on how my Centipede turned out with the vinyl sideart, I think this will look just fine when it's on a cab.
I was just over at a friend's house that has an original Pac with the blue speckles on the sideart, and I think this vinyl artwork looks brighter and more vibrant than the original. Again, that is comparing a 20 yr old paint job that has had countless hands and who-knows-what all over it through the years, so...
I haven't taken the premask off the sideart yet, I'll wait until just before I install it. I pulled the premask off the kick panel artwork and took a few pics.

A little off-topic, but here are some shots of the cp overlay. The yellow & blue are a little lighter on the new one versus the original, but here again I am comparing an original 20+ yr old overlay to the brand new one. The cp on top is an old one I will be refinishing soon, and the lower one is one I just finished and put the new overlay on.

Thank you very much for the great education, Oscar! This told me exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks for showing the CP overlay as well!

Yeah. In fact, I may might have some interesting news to post. Stay tuned tomorrow (june8)...

A price drop, hopefully, since I am going to need more... :)

I posted some pics of the sideart in this thread:

If anyone would like additional pics, just let me know. I might sell the cab in the near future, so let me know quickly if you do. :)

RayB,

OK folks. I'm really sorry I left you hanging like that, but I now have permission to let you in on the news. Two Bit is readying a new run of PacMan side-art and this time around the art will be flipped correctly on that one side!
In fact, Bob Sokol at Two Bit wants us to check out this proof artwork to make sure it's all good:

If it looks good to you guys, I'll let him know.

Well, I had hoped it would be a price drop, but at least its more true to original now
:)
