Title: Is there BYOAC etiquette for posting ebay listings?
Post by: mmmPeanutButter on June 28, 2004, 03:57:21 pm
I know that when I find something on ebay that looks like a good deal and I want to buy it, I keep my mouth shut.

But, if I find something on ebay that's a good deal and don't want to buy it, should I post it?

Part of me says yes (and I see plenty of people doing it).  I mean, this is a community and if I know of a good deal, I should pass it on, right??

The other part of me says "no way dude!"  What if I were watching an auction and was all excited to get a good deal and then it all of a sudden gets posted on BYOAC and the price doubles??

[mini rant] Maybe if you're looking for good ebay deals, you should do just that: Look for good ebay deals on ebay! [/mini rant]

So the question is:  what's your feeling on posting ebay listings?

Sure.. but do it in the buy / sell forum instead of the main.

I'm more of the mind that you shouldn't post it because if you do, it won't be a good deal anymore, and you may screw one of we, your brethren, out of a sweet deal.   ;)

On the other hand, if you find things for sale at, say, TigerDirect.com or RadioShack that are good deals, you should post because doing so will not affect the price.

I somewhat agree about not posting them. however,I still think that we have to help each other out.  I've put up an auction or two and I've seen some guys walk away with some good deals, but also some bad ones.

On one hand it's letting your friends know of something they might have missed, on the other it's maybe outting a fellow byoacer of something they have been watching and seriously driving up the price.  It's a tough call.

All that being said...we all get sniped anyway regardless of who knows.  I say leave it up to Karma.  If you see a byoac handle at the top of the bidder list, it's your choice if you want the thing bad enough to get into a bid war with him and get it.

I think we all scour ebay for the deals...it's pretty rare that someone finds something totally hidden from one of us.

I know some of the people in the DFW area and we are pretty good about letting each other know what we are going for.....somehow we gotta get AlanS17 involved in that ;)

exactly, If you are going to bid and another guy was looking for the same item, chances are he was going to bid anyways, so the heads up in here becomes redundant.  But it does make for interesting reading some days just to see what things go for...

Yeah, I had an auction I was waiting on posted here.  Price probably would have gone too high anyway, but... I was still sorry to see it posted.  So, I've decided not to post any more ebay listings here (unless they're my auctions  ;D).  I have sent a heads-up via PM to people I know are positioned to grab a really good one, but not a public post.

On the other hand, I posted a listing here from the KLOV boards.. it was that warehouse sale in TX.  AlanS17 snagged 12 machines on that one- and I'm glad "one of us" got it.

And then there was that free Robotron machine in Palo Alto that somebody cross posted from RGVAC- I was darn glad to see that, as I would have missed it otherwise.  (no, I didn't get it, but still.. )

So, I guess you just have to use your judgement about what to post and what to keep quiet about.

He may have had this post in mind:
Radio Shack giving out free stuff !!! (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=1;action=display;threadid=18908;start=msg151219")

I'm in no financial position to laugh at getting anything in the store that's under 5 bucks for free.
