I have noticed that most of the cabinets in the cabinets look really good with the laminate instead of paint. Anyone have any suggestions on products for black laminate for control panel and/or sides of cabinets? costs?

for my cp, I laminated the top with some kitchen counter stuff from home depot. it cost @ $18 for a 2x4' sheet of the stuff, plenty big to fit on the top of the cp.
best to have a router if you're going this route tho. what I did was cut the holes in the cp, glue on the laminate, roll it (as per instrictions) and then pierced the laminant from the bottom up with a 3/4" bit (to get your bit in there) and routed it out for a smooth hole.
The laminate available at home depot was greyish black, looked excellent for the cp. I don't remember if they had black...
be carful not to let too much of the glue dry in the holes, or you'll have a hard time sanding it away.
I finished the sides, didn't laminate, so I don't know costs there...
Hope this helps somewhat...

you can go pre laminate..other words melamine.its very very cool..my cab is like that...where i get the idea?local arcade has every machine with pre laminate..my 2 8x4 sheets cost me $65 total with cuts from local lumber..this is the easiest way but make sure you use sharp tooth blade(there are chiping).circular saw is good for this kind of work.
trust me...the result is very cool...saw the seller in ebay selling cabinet only..the 4 players simpsons cab..he is using the same stuff...try and getting BLACK...white suck..i have white..it gets dirty..
black is cool looking...

I used black formica on the sides of my cab. It was easy and came out real good. It was the first time I've used formica so it's an easy process. An 8X4 sheet went for around $45 at home depot. A router with laminate bit and a roller are 2 things that really help.

Your not going to find 4x8 sheets of black Melamine at Home Depot or Lowe's and most lumber yards won't have any in stock. It's just not that popular of a color. Most likely you are going to have to special order it from a lumber yard or cabinet maker. It usually runs about $40 a sheet. Look in your yellow pages for lumber yards and see what they can do for you.

Forget special ordering. Just call the stores and lumberyards until you find a place that stocks black melamine. If you ask where they special order from, they might actually tell you. The reward is -- no markup. I know for a fact that the lumberyard paid $35 per 4x8 sheet for the laminate they "special ordered" for me. Then they jacked up the price to $59! >:( Next time, I just asked them where I could buy direct, and they told me. Saved me $24 a sheet!
Also, in my opinion, melamine scratches too easily. I ran the router around mine to cut out the sides, and it got a surface scratch all the way around, just from a piece of sawdust that the router picked up. There's no way to buff or sand that out without ruining the finish. I re-finished with laminate, and after all the handling and dragging it across the saw horses, scraping off excess glue, etc, it doesn't show a mark! Looks really professional. I went with pac-man yellow on the outside, and black on the inside.
