I am restoring an old Donkey Kong. Does antone know what kind (gloss, semi-gloss, spray, etc...)of paint and color to get. Or is it best to just bring in a chip to match at the paint shop?
thanks, Patrick

Don't even think about spray paint. It will turn out like crap. Unless you have a professional spray gun of some sort.
Take a paint chip to color match, and buy some good primer.
I repainted my Q*Bert using a FOAM roller with lots of fine sanding between coats. It turned out very sweet. You could not tell that it is not laminate.
Take your time and do it right. Sand down to the wood, primer it, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand, and paint.
Peace,
Craig

Int. Latex/Semi-Gloss EZ Kare

For the black trim, coin door and marquee holders on both DK and DKJr I just used satin black rustoleum spray paint.

This Original Arcade Cabinet Paint Tips and Codes (http://www.tutankham.com/paints.htm) may be of some interest to anyone trying to find the right shade (tint) of color for their original/replica arcade cabinet.
According to this guide (http://www.tutankham.com/paints.htm) the Donkey Kong Blue (http://www.appolo.com/colorcodes/donkey_kong_blue.htm) posted at Appolo.com (http://www.appolo.com) is too dark and in the wrong hue.
However, since there is no accurate color yet sampled in this giude the Appolo color code is probably your best bet, unless you take a sample (paint chip) of an original DK to your local paint/hardware store and get them to match it for you.
Best of luck! And be sure to post some pics of your cab when you're finished. :)

I used Lowes Enterprise Semi Gloss oil based paint (same kind as others used on Brian's Arcade site). They matched a piece of laminate that chipped off the cab to this:
Base 4-1134
added colors:
101 -1 shot
102 -25 shots
103 -7 shots
113 -2 ounces, 13 shots, 1 half shot
I think it matches quite well :) , just not sure what kind of brush to use so I do not get all the brush marks. Might try to lightly sand then add another coat. In the pic I have painted the right most part of the cab.

Brush?? Why not a roller?

Donkey Kong, as was most Nintendo cabinets was finished in Formica laminate and not painted. Paint does not stick to Formica. It scratches right off.

By the way that's not my site.

I finished the paint job, and I think I have a nice match. The bottom of the cabinet around the coin door has not been painted, the rest has. Check out the pics I think it came out great...
