Title: WTB Cheap/used comp monitor/tv/arcade monitor
Post by: MrFish7 on June 15, 2004, 04:54:49 pm
I am looking to buy a cheap/used computer/arcade monitor, or a television. The bigger the better. I live in northern Virginia, Fairfax and am willing to travel thirty to forty minutes for a good deal.

Thank you.

Mr. Fish,

Oddly enough, I will be in Fairfax on Thursday to see, of all things, Phish.  :)  (at the Regal Cinema simulcast, at least)

I have a 25" Nanao monitor that I can surely part with.  It's non-working right now, but I think all it needs is one single pot replaced.  I can't guarantee that, though.  I believe you can get an 8-liners chassis for it for about $100.  I'll sell you the monitor for $75, and even bring it to you!  :)

Haha, I dont know what a "one single pot" is or how to replace it. I also dont know what a 8-liner chassis is or where to get one or why I need it. But that size is really nice, perhaps you could try to help me out with my ignorance?

Edit: Also what is the model number and how long has it been unfunctioning?

A pot is a potentiometer.  It's what you turn when you want to turn up the volume on your radio.  (unless you have one of those new-fangled kind where you push a button to make it louder)  The one that is broken on this board is the horizontal size pot.  I think it's a 100k potentiometer, easy to replace.  Unfortunately Radio Shack doesn't carry them in the right size and that's all my options in this neck of the woods.  Fixing it this way would cost about $20 (assuming you need to buy a soldering iron as well as the part).

As far as "8-liners," that is a guy who builds monitor chassis to turn any kind of working tube, from tv or broken arcade monitor, into an arcade monitor.  He's pretty reliable; most people say his products are great.  Check his site out at www.8liners.com, or, more specifically,

http://www.8liners.com/datatech/monitor.html (http://www.8liners.com/datatech/monitor.html)

The model number is Nanao MS8-26U.  It came from an Indy 500 cab.  It's CGA/EGA switchable. (low/medium resolution)  It's also the same model found in most Virtua Fighter cabinets.  Using an 8liners chassis would cost about $100 for the repair...not so much a repair as a refurbishment, really.

Either way, it's pretty cheap and it's a decent monitor with very nearly unnoticable burn-in.  Let me know as soon as you can, I'm leaving tomorrow (Thursday) around 10 am.  I can send pictures this evening if you need.
