Title: 4 player spinner games?
Post by: Rhetro on June 11, 2004, 11:13:53 am
Hello everyone.

I was wondering if there were any 4 player spinner games? Or has anyone been known to include 4 spinners into their control consoles for use in some of the console emulators that used them?

I know it's a crazy question but I was just wondering.

Thanks!

Warlords is the only one I can think of.

Warlords is classed by MAME as using 'paddle' input type, and in this case it is right!  Spinners will work, but depends if you want the original feel...

I think you could interface 4 spinners using MAME Analog + - a spinner on each axis of 2 mice.  MAME's standard ctrlr ini files have this:

P1_DIAL                 "KEYCODE_LEFT | JOYCODE_1_LEFT"
P1_DIAL_EXT             "KEYCODE_RIGHT | JOYCODE_1_RIGHT"
P2_DIAL                 "KEYCODE_D | JOYCODE_2_LEFT"
P2_DIAL_EXT             "KEYCODE_G | JOYCODE_2_RIGHT"
P3_DIAL                 "KEYCODE_J | JOYCODE_3_LEFT"
P3_DIAL_EXT             "KEYCODE_L | JOYCODE_3_RIGHT"
P4_DIAL                 "JOYCODE_4_LEFT"
P4_DIAL_EXT             "JOYCODE_4_RIGHT"

...so in theory it can probably handle 4 spinners.

I wouldn't have thought any consoles use spinners, paddles perhaps...I got into consoles when all you got was pads, so I'm probably wrong on that :)

Me too, although there are some 4-player driving games (Demolition Derby, Championship Sprint) that could use spinners for controls.

What is the technical difference between spinners and paddles?  Aside from the shape of the handle, aren't they both optical controllers that move in a circular motion?  What makes them different?

Paddles typically are pot based I think and have resistance and restricted movement.

So you could only move the paddle wheel say 180 degrees instead of freely like an optical spinner
