Title: 2 Joystick games
Post by: MasTequila on June 11, 2004, 08:46:36 am
I am putting together a somewhat modular control panel design and I was have a few questions.

1.How many games use 2 joysitcks?

2.Are they trigger joysticks?

3.Are they 4 or 8 way?

4.Are there any 2 or 4 player games that use 2 joysticks per player or do the players take turns on  the same set of 2 joysticks?

Thanks,
~Mas

4.  Smash TV used 2 8-way Joys per player

(Per player, right - i.e. not SF, MK, 1943, etc.)

A brief list would be:

Robotron
Smash TV
BattleZone
Assault
Sarge
Vindicators
Crazy Climber
Karate Champ

I'm sure there are tons more, but just off the top of my head.

>2.Are they trigger joysticks?

Generally only the "Tank" games use triggers.  Vindicators is about the worst with a trigger and thumb button on each stick.

>3.Are they 4 or 8 way?

Karate Champ was dual 4-way.
Some of the "Tank" games like Assault were dual 4-way, but I think they will play fine with an 8-way.
Many of the "Tank" games like Battlezone were dual 2-way vertical, but they will play fine with an 8-way.
All the others were 8-way.

>4.Are there any 2 or 4 player games that use 2 joysticks per player >or do the players take turns on  the same set of 2 joysticks?

Don't know of ANY 4-player dual joystick games.

Generally they take turns - exceptions would be Smash TV, Sarge, Vindicators, and maybe some others. . .

So 8 ways would be fine for most games?

Also would it be playable to have regular joysticks and then have a few buttons in the middle for the tank games or is button joysticks the best way to go?

The trigger joysticks are much better.  You can play the games in MAME, but it's pretty hard to control both vertical sticks and then have to reach down to press the buttons.

Best bet is to make a special panel for this (or if it's modular) to hack a bunch of PC joystick handles to arcade bases.

Heh I was just looking doing just that.

Anyone have any specific joysticks that work well or that don't work well so I know which to stay away from

And if I made enough for 2, duel joystick panels would i be able to play all the 2 joystick games?

Thanks,
Mas

Raider Pro's have been popular, I plan to use Gravis Destroyers, but any 2-button joystick is a pretty easy hack for this.

That's what I am planning (4 trigger-fire sticks), so I would say yes.

Assault and Karate Champ do NOT play well with 8-ways.
As a matter of fact, both of them are nearly unplayable with 8-ways.

I gout the Tulip style Top Fire joysticks from Happ.  I am very happy with them.
