Picked this up for a song in Atlanta. I am torn on what to do with it. Pretty it up and resell as a vigilante? Sell as is? (Everything works and it plays great, no burn, etc.) Strip the black paint off the sides and go back to dedicated moon patrol? I need some creative suggestions here.

Moon Patrol is a pretty cabinet. Great artwork. Plus I have a new little girl that might love playing that game.
-
Cool art!
-
It's one of my favorite games so I'm a little biased but I'd try to turn it back into a Moon Patrol.
-
I think you should restore it to a Moon Patrol Cab. I like that game. Much better artwork I think.
-
I'd want to fix it up as a Moon Patrol, because I like that game quite a bit. I wouldn't expect the sideart to turn out well so I'd plan to restencil it. However, sometimes Moon Patrol sells for a good (low) price in nice condition, because it isn't as desirable as a lot of williams games. So it is probably more cost effective to just buy a nice one. However if you can find a good deal on some of the parts to make it a MP again it might not cost you too much.

My first choice would be restoration. Moon Patrol is a great classic. Second choice..... Multi Williams kit!
Hey, at least that's closer to the intent of the cab than Vigilante! ;)
-
I like vigilante more but its orignally a moon patrol so u should make it what it is.
but please save the wiring harness board sideart cpo and bezal for a sell on ebay its all anyone would need :)
slap it all on a generic cab and it look good :)
You can make a new control panel and wiring harness well that 1 might be a bit tricky
but goodluck with your decesion ;D
-
I'm a huge Vigilante fan but the Moon Patrol cabinet is worth so much more.
You can send me the Vigilante PCB if you want ... I could use a spare ;D :P
-
I say...
Strip down the black, see if you can save the art underneath. Since it's really simple art, it should not be that hard.
See if you can get a boardset on eBay. I see them for ~$20 all the time. If not, put a computer running Mame in there and make it dedicated.
Finding the controls for the CP might be a bit hard, but it doesn't look like they hacked the CP too much.

I may be looking to sell it (the pcb) as well as the marquee, bezel, and if by chance I can save them, the sideart and cpo. What do you think is a fair asking price?
-
hmmm ... I'd say $50- $60 for a Vigilante kit would be a fair asking price ... you don't see those everyday on eBay (assuming you can get the side art off without damaging it).
You should be able to get that on eBay easily. (It's been weeks since I seen a Vigilante board for sell on eBay).
I'd say $10 - marquee, $10 - monitor bezel, $10 - side art, and $19 - $29 for the PCB cleaned up.
Hopefully it finds a good home :) (If I wasn't in need of a UV EPROM Eraser ... I'd make you an offer but my cash is going towards that this month and they aren't cheap :-\ )

Lookin' good. I may have a benefactor that wants it restored (and will pay). I will keep you posted!
-
I personally would pretty it up and leave it as is. Moon Patrol is more common than Vigilante, which is a fun game anyway, and that cabinet has good sideart, rare for a conversion game.
In general I don't reccomend "unconverting" good working conversions with full artwork, save the unconversions for the deaed stuff, or the stuff with half the artwork ripped off.
Basically, if you unconvert that thing you will be minus a perfectly good set of Vigilante sideart, and a Vigilante control panel, and that stuff is not reproed, and that "kit" you pull off the cabinet isn't going to fit anything other than a moon patrol since it has already been cut down to fit one.
-
Well I found a benefactor that wants a Moon Patrol multigame. I insisted that he keep the cp as is so I will keep the vigilante 8-way stick, moon patrol button layout, and use a jpac to interface to the jamma harness.
I gave alot of thought to what Paige said, but it all came down to what I could do ($$) with the cabinet.
I started stripping the black off and the art underneath is AWESOME! - No pic yet, but dang it is going to look good.
I have an original marquee and bezel on the way and will be getting the cpo from Arcade Shop here in georgia this weekend.
Will keep everyone posted and thanks for the input.
-
Right on! The Moon Patrol artwork is the best on any cab, IMO! And it is tonsofun to play.
-
i want that moon patrol marquee!

I know of another one that was billed as very nice. He will sell and ship it for 28.00. I you are interested, let me know.

Here are some new pictures with the artwork revealed. I am very happy with the way it looks. A few scuffs here and there but overall very nice. Still waiting on the bezel and marquee but the jpac is in, the pc is mostly set up. Also waiting on the soundcard and need to choose a video card. Enjoy.
-
I really love the artwork. More than I thought I would. I am starting to regret that it is going to someone else.
-
I followed Oscar's instructions on the stripping. Goof off 2 with a nylon brush. It worked like a charm.
-
It's beginning to look alot like Christmas.... :)

CPO is from www.arcadeshop.com here in GA. It really is well done. It has the same texture as the original too. I also got some misc parts from another guy here in GA named Matty. He buys/restores/sells primarily pinball games, but also deals with video games as well. He is really a top notch guy. He picked up the cpo for me so I could get the parts and the cpo from him without having to make two trips. His website is at www.playpinball.net. If your in need of a pin or pin repairs he is your man in GA.
-
OMG, that sideart looks sooo nice 8) Amazing that you can just get the black paint layer off while the artwork stays on.
BTW, what are the dimensions of that Moon Patrol CPO?

It really did come out well. The dimensions of the CPO are approx. 23" x 15.5"

DAMN!!!! That sideart looks great!!!! Good job there....
-
I keep going back to the pictures of the artwork. It's subtle and still incredibly cool. Man, I'm so jealous :P

How do you think I feel!? I have it and I am going to have to give it up in about two weeks... >:(
-
Ha, Ha, I forgot that yes, that makes me feel a lot better already ;D
-
The sideart is incredible. Looks fantastic.
-
Updates - "Before"
-
Updates - "After" - I have new coin inserts and plastic to install as well as the locks.
I ended up using rustoleum black satin paint and Zissner clear laquer. I will post a etter pic affter the locks etc are installed, but the finish really came out nice. It has just about the same texture and gloss as did areas of the cabinet that had paint but were hidded from wear and sun etc like just inside the marquee and inside the cabinet under the control panel. Seems to be pretty tough as well. I am going to clearcoat the sides using the Zissner clearcoat as well.
-
NOTE - Beware the Moon Patrol CPO adhesive! Took me 3 hours to get the cp clean! Yeesh!
The joystick hole was a bit off center and a little rough so I patched it from behind with some sheet metal and jb weld. I then added a little bondo to level out the top. I will recut the joystick hole as per the cutout on the CPO.
-
I don't think moon patrol is in the arcade art library yet and it looks like the side are would be easy to vectorize.

Could you take a nice side photograph straight on?

WOW what a nice cabinet
I love a moon patrol cab

mmmmm....bezel.....needs a quick cleaning but overall looks very good.

Oh, a picture of that bezel would be cool too. Or maybe a picture head on and some close ups depending on the resolution of your camera. I remember someone a while back who asked for high res pics of it to vectorize.

Wow, I can't believe how well that art turned out!! Looks quite good!

That looks VERY good...can't believe how well the sideart came out! I bet it'll be hard to let go of that one!

-
Wait a sec...am I seeing a metal CP repro behind the wooden one?
The cp actually has a metal overlay on top of the wood. Good thing too as the wood was pretty chewed up from the vigilante conversion. The metal was easier to patch and re-drill I think.
-
So what software will you be using?
Are you opting for MAME or for a Multi-Williams board?
-
So what software will you be using?
Are you opting for MAME or for a Multi-Williams board?
Dos MAME with ArcadeOS FE. 400mhz celeron, 256 mb ram, ATi vid card, Soundblaster 16 pci s card, jpac (the vigilante conversion used a jamma harness). Also has z26 for atari 2600 games, and colem for colecovision (at the risk of sounding like mr. 6000 gamesssess ala decimated centipede cab).
The cp is totally stock with the exception of an 8 way wico joystick that was in place for the vigilante conversion.
-
A response to a prvt message question, thought it might be of use to others.
Say, can you explain to me what Oscar described? I am trying to restore a Tatio cabinet and will need to strip the black paint
Did you use the spray goof off 2? or another type? It comes out as a paste correct?
Sure, the stuff I used is Goof Off 2 (GO2) . It is the water based, citrus smelling, indoor friendly, version of Goof Off (which is more pungent, etc). The GO2 that I used came in a windex type spray bottle and was not a paste, but a liquid. Same consistency as water. I had to strip the cab indoors hence my choice. Goof Off (1) may work the same way?
I simply laid the cab on its side, the sprayed the GO2 on the entire area to be stripped. Wait between 5 - 15 min (checking periodically to see how fast it is working). When it starts to seperate from the cabinet use a soft to medium nylon bristle brush and wipe the stripped paint away. On the areas that do not lift on the first round, reapply and wait a bit, repeat etc.
Couple of notes:
The key trick here is that the paint used on the cabs from the factory must be oil based wheras the operators generally used latex spray paint for conversions. GO2 is a latex paint stripper so it will not react with the oil based paint underneath the spray paint*.
* This is MOSTLY true, however, I did have a couple of spots that were stubborn so I brushed a bit more vigorously in those areas. When I was finished, I saw that I had stripped some of the factory clear coat or shellac off and in at least one spot thinned that oil based paint underneath. Brush lightly, and accept what you get (IMHO).
Use paper underneath the cabinet or a tarp, the little paint flakes get EVERYWHERE.
Lastly, when finished I used warm water and mild dish soap to clean the sides. I wanted to make sure I did not have residual stripper anywhere continuing to react with the paint and wood.
-
That is like magic, seeing how the Moon Patrol side art popped out of that black mess. I own a fairly clean Moon Patrol and that one looks sharper than mine, I would have never have guessed it from looking at the first pics posted. Congratulations!

Finishing the inner works, but the cabinet is finished!

Beautiful. So what games are you playing on there, considering you stuck to the original CP layout?

Beautiful. So what games are you playing on there, considering you stuck to the original CP layout?
The layout is the same, but the joystick is different. I'm not sure if it's an eight-way or a four-way, though.
-
It is an 8-way wico. All MAME games are loaded, but I used the filters in arcadeos to restrict the games displayed.
-
Bravo and Well Done!!! That cab looks greeeeeaaaaaaattttttt!!!

Wow, when I gave my reccomendation I had no idea it would come out THAT nice.

Wow, when I gave my reccomendation I had no idea it would come out THAT nice.
Thanks Paige, I do appreciate the compliment. It is comming together better that I thought it would and frankly better than it should considering what I am getting for it. Luckily much of my time was really spent on the dos/arcadeos/dmame/etc configs so next time around I have a huge leg up. I haven't lost any money per se, the entire project cost is just under 400 if you can believe it and I am getting a small amount from the buyer on top of that, but I have invested a good deal of time. It has become a labor of love not of profit. Oh well.
I finally got the PCI soundcard working in pure dos, see this thread for details if you are going to attempt this.

That is awesome man, you are defining a new breed of mamers that are unconverting to mame. I think its in good taste to do that like youve done with your omega mame and now this one. Im currently doing the same thing with a Kangaroo cab that was converted to a gunforce. Im still working on removing the paint from the sideart and there is some water damage but im going to great lengths to repair all the damaged areas and seal off the original artwork so I may prep the outer and work around it.
Also thank you for the write up on your soundcard problems, that is going to probably come in very handy for me.
And then one last thank you for the paint removal write up as that is pretty much the way I was going but im using the 3m safest stripper since the artwork is silk screened and i havent had and harsh reactions yet so its best suited for my task.
Great job!
-
Man good job.
-
Man this cab is just so good 8)
It's good that so many people post "kudo's posts" on this thread. That way I'm automatically reminded that I have to take another look. I swear, of the 1700+ views at least half are mine ;D
This cab is even starting to turn my wife around that sideart isn't such a bad thing after all.

Thanks for the kind words. I wish the cab was having the same effect on my wife.... ::)
-
*sigh* I only wish the sideart on mine had come out like that. I attemped to save it, but the paint remover I used was like acid. Ate right thru. Of course, this is two years gone now, and I've learned a lot since then. If I run into another Moon Patrol I'll employ the tactics used here.
Heck, if I could find one locally I'd ask to make stencils and repaint mine.

hah, I had that exact same problem with the sound blaster 16 isa in my dos mame setup. The drivers I downloaded came with a pnpcfg that installed these setup wizards. I had previously installed sb16 all standard defaults, and it had the dma on 5 like you had, so I went through the wizard, selected "Auto Select" instead of the one selected already, and it set itself up on the correct DMAs. Suprisingly though before I had it fully working, the sound WOULD work, Mame would run for about 3 seconds before it would freeze up and I'd have to restart the computer.
That cabinet is sweeeet man, I really like how it all turned out, very nice finish on all of it. That thing looks new, great job on a great restoration.

Finishing the inner works, but the cabinet is finished!
what are those black triangular things at the base of the cab in the corners? did you add them after the fact or were they already there? I need something like that to fix up the peeling corners of a cab that I have...
-
That looks great!
If you can get some good high res pics of the sideart I'll vectorize it for the art site and Peale so he can use it as a pattern.
EDIT: Just noticed that Recycled Past already volunteered. I'll take runner up if help is needed :)

They are corner protectors, Bob Roberts sells them here: http://www.dameon.net/BBBB/parts.html#hardware
Set of 4 Black steel cabinet corner protectors $12.00 http://www.dameon.net/BBBB/cabcornr.gif
I also used 1/16" aluminum angle "iron" on the sides and the front. I had to do a bit of modification in that I cut one side down to 3/4" so it would just cover the width of the cabinet on the bottom without overlap. I also cut the angles where the aluminum meets the corner protectors so it looks continuous. I may put a piece on the rear of the cabinet though not painted as that is where the dolly would go when moving.
Update:
Left to do:
Clean up on CP wiring
Fix power cord (found some frays)
Test ;D
BTW: Has anyone used the atari 2600 emu called z26? The "roms" or "bin files" come with long filenames used to id the game. When loaded onto dos, the filenames are truncated and appended with the old "~#" . I do not see a way to use a catver list so the names show up correctly in arcadeos? Any ideas?
Here is a better pic of how it came out. The pic below was taken before I replaced the t-molding.
-
I use angle iron and corner protectors too. They do wonders for beat up cabinets.

Sigh...
Ok, so I got the replacement jpac and the control issue is resolved.
I am still having fairly severe video problems and really need some help at this point.
I am just going to brain-dump the problems, if there is anything you see that you can chime in on please do.
The Setup:
- The monitor is a Wells Gardner Model WG19K4903
- Power to the jamma harness has been disabled
- I am running pure dos with arcadeos
- dmame version = 069
- video card is an ATI 3D Rage II+ DVD (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5106011395&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT)
- I have monitor = 1 (Arcade Monitor) set in arcadeos.cfg
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When booting, the screen is split as it is supposed to be. Other than various rolling issues (normal) and the screen split, the pixels look pretty good (read on)
When arcadeos starts and places you at the menu, you can see various random pixels turning on and off when they are obviously not supposed to be. It looks a bit like static but a little different.
At this point the screen has a little shimmy to at well. Very subtle but it is there.
(BTW: The monitor looks incredible when the vigilante board is installed. Highly doubt this is an monitor problems)
(BTW#2: The vidoe card picture on a pc monitor looks awsome as well. I say this as at least one person mentioned that it sounded like a video card memory problem. Don't think so)
Some games I tried and the effects: [note: all of these games looked fine on a pc monitor] [ note2: All games that displayed had the same "static" effects as noted above.]
Moon Patrol - Some kind of major malfunction - it is hard to tell as the output is sent to a split screen. Almost looks like some kind of memory dump or something.
720 - Entire game image was on a split screen, left and right borders were in the middle.
Zaxxon - Screen stretched horizontally.
Berzerk - Same as moon patrol
Uggh - I am ready to fall out so I am going to knock off, but if anyone can reply with some direction I would totally appreciate it. I want to get this sucker done and out asap.
-
Since everything is on a split screen, you're not in 15KHz mode. Did you also set your DOS Mame for arcade monitor mode? I bet'cha didn't!
-

Everything isn't split screen. On the list above, it was just 720.
I did not set dmame for arcade monitor, I thought arcados did that. That probably won't change the "static" situation as that happens on the fe as well as games. I will try that and see if it helps a bit with the other issues.
-
I got a chance to work on the MP a bit tonight. When I set the video mode in arcadeos to 320x200 things really started looking up. The ArcadeOS screen looks great now. No shimmy, static, and the picture is bigger, clear and focused!
Problem is when I go into mame (play a game) I am back where I started. The only progress really there is that I found if I I turned off stretch, I get better results on vertical games like donkey kong which was being stretched out horizontally.
Now in DK, the screen is really really small, like 10"x10" or so. Any ideas as to what that is about?
Also still seeing static, shimmy a little too. I looked for a similar setting in mame.cfg with no luck. Am I missing something? I feel close here, this appears to have proven the vg card can send the right signal.
-
A follow-up with a little progress, jpac is great, really looks like a

[Another Update]
After I sent the note above, I worked a while longer and had some more success -
Moon Patrol - By setting
scanlines = no
stretch = no
resolution = auto
tweak = yes
I got the picture I needed. It looked great, a tad off center to the right, but I think I can sort that out. Important thing is, no shimmy, static, etc.
Also got Berzerk working the same way.
Asteroids and Major Havoc - THey look good as above except that around the vector lines there is static. It doesn't appear that the pixels that SHOULD be on are turning off, rather there is a little snow around the pixels (vector lines) I don't see this "snow" on other areas of the screen just right near the vector lines.
Ghouls and Ghosts - I thought this would be a good test as it has the same res as MP - no dice, with the same settings the picture is squashed with static and shimmy.
That is all I can think of right now, I am going to re-read the docs on the arcadeos and mame display settings and make sure I fully understand the intent of each setting. Hopefully I can find a pattern for setting up other games.
Let me know if any of this rings a bell. Thanks.
-
The only thing I can think of wouldn't be an overall solution. It'd be a per game solution. Going into ArcadeOS per that particular game and tweaking the settings. I had to do that with quite a few games to get them to display correctly.
-

That appears to be where I need to go...
One thing I forgot to mention though, I think it was moon patrol, then in ghoouls and ghosts, maybe Jungle hunt as well. Whil the picture was great, on at least two of those I had to adjust the vert hold. Anyone seen this behavior before?
-
Likely you haven't found the 'sweet spot' yet. That one little spot where nothing moves. Likely it'll be a bunch of micro adjustments to find that spot.
Also, if you haven't already, set always sync to 1. That might help.

<edit> Ok, I see now you mean set "-alwayssynced" correct? I thought you were just using bad grammar! :) ("..., set always sync to 1. That might help.") I read that as, Set, ALWAYS, synch to 1. </edit>
What does the synch set to 1 do? Is that in Arcadeos, mame, or both?
Do you mean vsynch?
-vsync/-novsync (default: -novsync)
Synchronize video display with the video beam instead of using
the timer. This option can be used only if the selected video
mode has an appropriate refresh rate. Otherwise, MAME will
refuse to start, telling you the actual refresh rate of the video
mode, and the rate it should have.
If you are using a tweaked mode, MAME will try to automatically
pick the correct setting for -vgafreq; you can still override it
using the -vgafreq option.
Note: the 224x288 / noscanlines mode doesn't work on most cards.
Many games use this mode, e.g. Pac Man and Galaga. If it doesn't
work with your card, either turn scanlines on, or don't use
-vsync.
If you are using a VESA mode, you should use the program that
came with your video card to set the appropriate refresh rate.
Note that when this option is turned on, speed will NOT
downgrade nicely if your system is not fast enough (i.e.,
gameplay will be jerky).
-alwayssynced/-noalwayssynced (default: -noalwayssynced)
For many tweaked VGA modes, MAME has two definitions: One which
is more compatible, and one which is less compatible but uses
frequencies compatible with -vsync. By default, the less-
compatible definition is used only when -vsync is requested;
using this option, you can force it to be used always.

Hey that's comming along nicely.
You have your heart in it, and it shows! :)

...
After I sent the note above, I worked a while longer and had some more success -
Moon Patrol - By setting .
scanlines = no
stretch = no
resolution = auto
tweak = yes
I got the picture I needed. It looked great, a tad off center to the right, but I think I can sort that out. Important thing is, no shimmy, static, etc.
Also got Berzerk working the same way.
Cripes! Don't ask why, I had to reload arcadeos and some other things. I made the changes to moon patrol in the "game config" section of arcadeos. Now the screen is a little 10"x10" box again so obviously it was more than the 4 settings above. It has been to long and I have forgotton what else I did.
Does anyone know, can I specify dmame OR advmame on a per game basis in Arcadeos? I have it set to default to dmame. I tried running a game after changing the emu to amame thinking that would run advmame, no luck though. Anyone done this?
-
Ok, holy cow I think I am almost done.
I reverted to an older version of arcadeos and advancemame and things are looking up.
Outstanding issues:
When I exit using 'esc' from z26, I do not go back to arcadeos. System hangs and I have to restart.
I noticed a lag when I move up or down in arcadeos in both mame and z26 menus. It is like the pc is taking a while to draw the snap or something. Anyone seen this? I was not having this problem until a min ago.
In advance mame, what are the shift keys for esc, enter, 1, 2, 5, etc?
Other than these issues and a bit more tweaking on the video modes I am there. Finally I can get back to the Omega Mame!

I don't think moon patrol is in the arcade art library yet and it looks like the side are would be easy to vectorize.
Could you take a nice side photograph straight on?
I will, also I plan to get a trace of each side for future use.
any news about the tracing progress or hires pics ?

does this means that we will not have material to trace the Moon Patrol sideart ?

arg. I blew it and forgot. I told the person who got the cabinet I would come over in a week or so and tweak some things if needed. I will try to bring a camera and get the pics. I did notice that oscar has the marquee up on his site.

That looks fantastic! I can only hope my Moon Patrol restoration looks half as good. I'm keeping mine all original though. :)
-
I made this for someone asking about how the MP was wired and how the jpac fits into the mix.
-
Nice diagram. But looks like you have 2 power supplies in the mix? One outside and one inside your PC??
-
One is the isolation transformer for the monitor, I would guess.

Yes, the PC has its own and then the cabinet has one too.

Sorry to ressurrect this "dead" thread, but I wanted to thank you for the
suggestions on how to strip the black paint off a cabinet.
Like you, I have a converted Williams cab that I have decided to put "back to original" (or close) and I had resigned myself to making stencils and repainting the cabinet. I'll be trying the "Goofoff2" approach.
I wish I'd had these suggestions when I had my Ms. Pac project in the house.
The paint stripping on that one failed horribly and it ended up getting gutted out and the pieces sold off. This new project should go much better. :)
Did you do any touch up to the Moon Patrol sideart at all after stripping the black?

No Prob. :) My Stargate art is dicey... and that black paint just doesn't want to come off. Got most of it, but there's still a lot left.
I'm probably going to sand 'er down and repaint. But that's another project. I still don't even have a PC for my mame cab yet.
But, got my IJ pinball working correctly, and got my Star Wars fixed finally, so I guess I'm getting ahead somewhat. :)
