Title: How would you fit a control panel on this cab-in-et (HAPPY NOW, ZAKK?!?!?!?!)?
Post by: SirPeale on June 09, 2004, 10:10:08 am
Watching this cabinet on eBay, and just curious how you would attach a control panel to it.  I'm just looking for a simple one player dealie.

I *think* the cab is one of these.  Not quite sure, as it looks like the monitor bolts lower down.

Looks like an Atari cabaret to me:

Guess I'll forget about this one.  The price is certainly right, and I've got all the other parts to make a neat mini, but the CP would be the dealbreaker right now.

Why couldn't you build out a decent CP from that?  Looks like you could attach a couple of 2x4's to the inside on either end, and then slide/attach a "normal" CP over them?

Because I'm broke.  Heck, I'm broker than broke.

That is an easy cp to make.  It just sits on the boards going to the back of the cabinet.  The control panel would just be a rectangle of wood.  The rear edge of the cp would have a piece of L attached.  The L would go over the bezel to hold it in place.

Then you just need a marquee to cut and mount in front below the cp.

It's a ponycab if i've ever seen one.  Here is how I converted one just like it "on a budget".  In hindsight I would do an external bolt on panel.

Zakk: two things -

1) BRIGHTNESS.  Can't make out a damn thing in those pics.

2) Did you know you didn't update your announcement when you finished your cocktail?

The brightnes looks okay to me??  Well, except that last pic, but I was trying to get a pic of the effect of the marquee light showing through, and the fact that the buttons lit up (because of the florescent light underneath them).  It was my early crappy digital camera though, and maybe this lcd display I'm using at work has a higher brightness setting.  Lets put it this way: you're not missing much :)

And what announcement?  If the project announcement board?  I really don't like posting completed projects there (It was announced on the main page).  :)

You started your project there, you just didn't post when it was completed.  It's a good thing I check your site regularly, or I'd have missed it!

So what's your next project (besides GA2)?

Heh, I don't mind starting it there, but when it's completed (and nothing is going to change), I hate the "WHY WOULD YOU NOT PUT SEVEN BUTTONS?!?!!?!" and "WHO PUTS A SPINNER ON THE RIGHT SIDE" and "WON'T YOUR HAND HIT THAT JOYSTICK WHEN YOU'RE SMASHING THE TRACKBALL IN GOLDENTEE???" stuff like that.  Hard not to get defensive, so I keep quiet :)  I've done enough now that I know why I do things a certain way...I dunno, is that a bad attiude on my part?

Actually, that and your next questions tie together.  To avoid that kind of response, I started my next project there and asked for input.  It's http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=10;action=display;threadid=19829

I think that project is going to be donated to a golf tourney that goes to help ALS research (Lou Gehrig's Disease), I'm not sure, I don't know if I'm that generous or not yet  ;)...it was going to be my own personal project..

Oh, besides GA2... hmmm, I dunno, haven't looked that far ahead...real estate is so damn busy I have less and less time to get at these things.  (boo hoo to me). :)

P.S. What's a cabient?

You're in real estate?  Didn't know that.  Always wanted to try it, but don't have time until the kids are in school.

Hehe yeah, I'm a slimy real estate agent.  Put it this way, before real estate, I was doing cabinets like that pony cab.  Now I'm doing the GA2 cabs and even thinking about "giving them away" (okay okay, a tax writeoff, but still, that's a lot of cash out of my pocket).  You should try it, I mean it's not for everyone, and it's a lot harder than people think, but hey if it makes it easier to support hobbies like this great one, then it can't be all bad, right?

Oh, and the spelling check was nice, very subtle ;)
