I want my CP to be lean and mean and if it's just "breakout" type games, then I can do without a spinner.
Thanks!

There are A LOT more than that, not sure why that website missed a bunch. If you look in the Mame games list and look for a control of "dial" you see all of them. If you do not have a steering wheel, a spinner can be used to drive.

I was thinking this today myself, since I am in the process of making my trackball/spinner/analog stick panel...
I used MAMEWAH's Input Type and Category (catlist) filters, to give a list of non-driving spinner games:

Since the 'dial' input type in MAME is incredibly inaccurate, I started going thru the games to see which could actually be played with a dial - see the attached Excel sheet (rename to .xls) my WIP list. The 'y/n/?' column is for my benefit, basically this is whether I can play the game on my panel or not. Ones which are not playable are generally rotary stick games or games with unique controllers. The list isn't great, but might be of some use :)
BTW if no-one has Excel post and I'll convert it...
Edit: just wanted to say that this list is generated from MAME v0.83, and doesn't include clones.
Edit 2: Car Polo slipped thru as it is classed as 'Sports', and Road Blasters as I didn't think to filter out 'Shooter / Driving' games.
-
Well, looks like I am buying a spinner...lol
So, do they work well for driving games??? Outrun??
Thanks

Roadblasters is optical 270-degree yoke, so I think it should stay in anyway.

Yeah the reason I said that is I filtered out ALL driving games, as I'm not interested in them for my analog panel (I am making a separate steering wheel panel you see...)

Won't work well with OutRun as that used a ~270deg wheel (POT based). It will work very well for games which originally used spinner type wheels, eg Pole Position, APB, Super Sprint etc...from memory there are ~35 of those.
Edit: exactly 35 ;)

Do the beatmania/hiphopmania games really use a spinner? I thought the turntable was just a fancy mechanism for hitting one of two (clockwise/counter-clockwise) switches. As long as the turntable is moving, the button is 'pressed'.
In MAME, buttons 6 and 7 are both for the turntable, and you need both of them to play properly. While playing a song, quick sucessive presses of a single turntable button are ignored, forcing you to alternate between the two buttons, ie make a scratching motion. I'd imagine this is because there is no set scratch distance on the turntable so the software ignores the presses for a very short duration to compensate for long or jerky scratches.
I'm not familiar with how spinner input is handled in MAME, but is it possible to have one direction of the spinner act as a button press, and the opposite direction to act as a different button? If so, you could come up with a cheap turntable top for your spinner and stick some buttons in the beatmania config and have a cheap controller for a very fun game.. Assuming you already have a spinner.
Anyways, didn't mean to hijack the thread, but I guess it's still spinner-game related.

i am thinking of building removable CPs for my cocktail cab and so currently thinking of builiding one CP with a spinner (i plan to have another with a TB and 3 buttons - for missile command;)
just wondering how many fire buttons would be required for a spinner CP?
i suppose most spinner games don't need many fire buttons.
would just 1 fire button be sufficient or more required?

If that is so, then chances are it is not properly emulated in MAME. Like SNK rotary sticks are treated as dials I believe, but do not use optics...

I'm building a trackball/spinner/analog stick panel atm...so I have 3 buttons for Missile Command, and that should cover spinner games. I think some spinner games use 2 buttons, oh, and Blasteroids uses 3.

Star Trek uses 4.

I'm just going by what I've observed while playing beatmania/hiphopmania in MAME. I've only had the chance to play it in arcades a few times. When the subject of beatmania as a spinner game came up, I just knew that mame treated the turntable as buttons and not a spinner. Someone who has experience with the actual arcade hardware would likely know for sure.

If i implement a removable CP with just a spinner and 3 buttons - will i still be able to control the FE? For example will the spinner allow me to scroll up/down and select a game in the list?
Or would I have to use one of the joystick CPs to use the FE?
Currently undecided on which FE to use - currently thinking about using MameWAH. Any recommendations?
The only thing with MameWAH is that it doesn't allow different emulators in the same game list - or am i wrong???
basically i would like all playble games listed in a single list (mame, espxe, daphne,pc games). it should support both horiz and vert displays. ideally it would support joystick, TB and spinner control operation.

It's very likely that MAME uses either buttons or spinner input for this. For example, in Arkanoid, you can move the VAUS with either the buttons or the dial input. In Ikari, you can use either the mouse (dial) or buttons for rotation. I imagine Beatmania is similar, although I haven't looked at it in MAME and have no idea how the actual arcade game works.

Depends how your frontend works and to some extent how your spinner is hooked up - If your frontend allows you to use a mouse to scroll vertically, then a spinner hooked to the Y-Axis will work. However, you might have to re-configure MAME since games like arkanoid are probably set to use an X-axis spinner.
In addition, if your frontend doesn't allow re-mapping of it's input buttons (or if you have different buttons selected for your main panel), you might have to load one codeset in your encoder for front-end use, and then swap this with a different codeset when MAME loads, and then back when MAME exits. Lots of work, but possible.

Speaking for MAMEWAH: it doesn't support PC joysticks, or mouse devices atm. And no, emulators can not be merged into one list :( Both are on my todo list - PC joystick & mouse support is high on my priorities (I am making my analog stick/spinner/trackball panel atm), but merging of emulators is not, since it requires a lot of core re-writing :P
So from what you've said you might be better off with a different FE - I'm sure Dragon King can do what you want...
-
just to clarify: when i say joystick - i mean arcade joystick wired through an IPAC (so that would be basically using the cursor keys).

OK MAMEWAH can handle that ;)
cbmeeks: just thought I would also mention the PC shareware game 'Juno Nemesis Remix' (brought to my attention by the 'good cab games' thread in the Software forum). The game is basically an update of Tempest, and includes a classic control mode which should be perfect for a spinner - I'll be trying it in a day or 2... :)

Ok, these could be played with a spinner, but these are mechanical rotory joys, so a spinner will feel akward. Luckily you can interface the actual rotory joys to a pc :)
Since the 'dial' input type in MAME is incredibly inaccurate
One of the reseason controls.dat started :) In reference to the person who quoted the project, realize that is a short list because there are only 511 games in the system right now. Please volunteer if you want more :) Also probably why Minwah posted his list...
In reference to beatmania, dial is a hack for the turn table. The actual controller did have a mechanism simular to the digital volume control on a stereo receiver.

For example, in Arkanoid, you can move the VAUS with either the buttons or the dial input
You can move it with buttons but not well. The buttons provide a direction but not speed, while the spinner provides both. You wouldn't be able to move quickly from side to side, which is essential for playing any "Breakout" type game. It's similar to an anlaog vs. digital joystick.

Right, I was merely trying to point out that MAME also lists buttons for movement in that game, even though the original used an optical spinner (I think) so you can't use MAME's indication of buttons for BeatMania to infer anything about the original game.

Can PC Stering wheels be used for mame driving games? if so, how? like the ones u see lined up at comp usa by the joysticks and gamepads.
-
Yes, but only for games supporting a 270 degree wheel.
(Pot based, self-centering, and have directional limiters, like an analog joystick).
Games that require the steering wheel to go all the way around repeatedly need a 360 degree optical wheel.
(Think BIG spinner).
-
i didnt get a spinner - i assumed my trackball could be used for spinner games......... am i wrong in this??
garry
-
It CAN be used, but I don't RECOMMEND it.
It's really hard to play games like Tempest with a trackball.
It's one of those things where, if you use ONLY a trackball, you'll probably think it's great.
If you ever use a spinner, and then try to go BACK to a trackball, you'll think it's not so great.
-
i think i will leave a space in the cp.... and maybe get one for future - mostly fighters i play anyway!
cheers for the advice.
