Title: TMNT/Simpsons question (another one)
Post by: CGRemakes on June 07, 2004, 12:41:06 am
As mentioned before, I am in the process of getting supplies ready for my next arcade machine.  I am using the TMNT/Simpsons plans available from jakobud.com, and had a design question.  Overall, this cabinet is just what I'm looking for, but I have a design question.  I will be using this machine to play console games.  For the most part, I will be using 4 joysticks, but there are times when I will be using the standard console controlers (not all games work well with a cab).  The angle of the screen on this particular cabinet is approximately 45 degrees, which works great if you are standing there playing with the joysticks.  However, when I use the console controllers and am sitting 6 feet away or so, the angle of the screen will likely make it difficult to view.  I was thinking about increasing the angle of the screen to about 55 - 60 degrees (the angle of the standard Midway cabs) to make it more viewable from a distance.  Will the increased angle make it difficult for all 4 players to see when they are standing up close playing with the joysticks?  Am I incorrect in calculating that it will be difficult to view from further away at 45 degrees?

This is sort of a difficult question because you are trying to do something with a cabinet that it was not designed for.

It's like asking:

"Should I mount my cabinet's monitor upside down so that I can play when I'm hanging from the ceiling?"

I think your assumptions are correct, you just have to weigh out the different options and determine what is most important to you.

As jakobud has said, it's a difficult question.

Depending on what monitor methoad your using (TV, PC monitor etc), don't have it completely fixed into the cabinet when 90% constructed.

This should allow you to alter the angle to suit both your needs.

Ok, another option I can go with is to use the Mortal Kombat plans.  It appears as though the NFL Blitz '99 cabinet just uses the standard Midway cabinet with a wider control panel.

Is this correct?  This would be better for viewing from a distance, but does it make it awkard for up close 4 player play?
