Title: Removing Tape Goo from Lexan...?
Post by: RetroJames on June 06, 2004, 07:44:28 am
I had to make some adjustments on a lexan CPO with a router so I put that blue painter's tape over the CPO to protect it.  Most of the tape came off with no problems, but there is some residual goo.  What could I use to get it off that is not going to scratch the heck out o this CPO?  Thanks!

I use an amazing product called "Goo Gone".  It removes any kind of "gooey" substance from anything with little or no effort.

Good luck.

Contact Cleaner and a soft rag. you can buy this stuff in spray cans from the electrical supply section of home depot.

dont use a product called Goof Off, it will almost melt the surface of the plastic.

I've never heard of Goo Off but Goo Gone works on anything.

this is the Goof Off product. I tried it on a classic Robotron marquee and while it did remove the sticker residue, it also melted the entire surface of the marquee.

Our Canadian Tire stores carry Goo Gone, maybe Goo Off is the American cousin product or something.

Good to know still.  ;)

FYI: WD40 should also work.  Tar & Bug remover works on glass & metal but I don't know if it would hurt plexi or not.

Just to throw another (and CHEAPER) option out there:  If this is sticky adhesive type goo of any kind, find an aerosol can of any (did I say any?  YES I DID!) common household product such as hair spray, deodorant, lysol, etc (unless it's a cooking product, stay away from those, they usually have some oil-based product in them that negates their usefulness).  Spray it on the stuff and wipe with a clean towel/rag/sock/shirt/fabric.

I've used all three of the above mentioned things with no problems whatsoever, and it has WORKED each and every time.  You can stop your worrying if you can't find Goof-Off at your local neighborhood store.  If the method I'm advocating doesn't work, THEN go waste your hard earned dough on a "specialized" product.

If Lysol will remove three month old Duct tape residue from a fender without ruining anything, it will work for your purposes too.

Common household Lighter Fluid removes glue without harming plastics. Remember no smoking while using it though.

Goof off is 95% xylene and 5% denatured alcohol. It's a good solvent mixture but I'd agree that it's too strong for use on most plastics.
