I am using (at this early testing stage) ArcadeFX as my front end - I have also been testing a couple of other FE and they all seem to do the same annoying thing.. when a game is launched, the DOS window appears distroying the illusion that my "real" arcade machine is actually a ---smurfy--- Micro$oft Windows based computer. ::)
Is there any FE or settings I can change to eliminate this window..?
Cheers

Are you using DOS MAME? First make sure you have Windows Commandline MAME.
Most cab FE's can get rid of that Window: MAMEWAH and I'm sure Dragon King, Kymaera & 3dArcade...

Yes indeedie do... Mame32...

Yes indeedie do... Mame32...
Contradiction: MAME32 is not Windows Commandline MAME...
I don't know how MAME32 reacts in the FE's I mentioned, but I would still recommend Windows Commandline MAME (www.mame.net).

Simple solution: MAME32 is DOS MAME! That's why. I've heard this mistake over 1000 times. If MAME has a frontend included with it, as MAME32 is, THEN ITS NOT DOSMAME!
Agh..

Hoopstar, go to the Mame Download page (http://www.mame.net/downmain.html) and download the windows command line version.

:-[ umm, I must apolagise.. I was/am using the command line version of MAME..
So now I guess I am back at square one - is this something that the FE has control over or can this be switched off within MAME itself?

I have MAMEWAH setup on my PC and it doesn't show the dos screen.
I highly recommend that if you wish to use this, download the MAMEWah Setup utility on his web site, because configureing the entire frontend with your joysticks is a nightmare ;D

Have you tried Emuwizard (http://www.whizzoconsulting.com/pages/projects/emuwizard.html)?

Set the 'Show DOS Box' option in Emulator Settings > Execution Settings. By default it should be on Auto-Show, but it sounds like you have it set on Yes (ie it will always be shown)...
