I bought an optical rotary joystick from Happ, and I'm a little confused on the pinouts. According to their faq, the PCB A052-1011-00 has the following layout:
Pin 1 - Output A
Pin 2 - +5V
Pin 3 - GND
Pin 4 - Output B
But what is the orientation? L->R, or R->L? Also, the cable they include goes:

| red | brown | orange | yellow |
-------------------------------
on one end, but they swap 1 & 2 at the other end. Now, red is almost universal voltage, so is the pinout they mention WITH the cable or the pins on the PCB? :-\
I don' t have a multimeter to test, I'd rather not fry anything with voltage if I don't have to. I also sent a question to their tech, but that might take a while. Assistance welcome. :)

I have two of these connected to an optipac.
brown: +5v
orange: GND
Red: X1
Yellow: X2
hope that gets ya going.

Yeah, that's how I have it. I have it on P1 Rotary. I verified the Optipac is found and installs the necessary devices, I also made sure that another rotary device (tornado optical with it's own interfaace) gets discovered and moves the mouse on a single axis. I don't have another device to hook to the optipac yet, but should soon.
Now, if I have this hooked to X1 and X2, I should see my mouse in WinXP move along that axis if I twist the stick correct? I've tried every permutation of mameanalog and the mutlmouse and axis options, and it won't work. I'm hoping I don't have a bum stick.
I have this in USB mode, and the rotary jumper is set to low.

Hmmm...this guy never got a reply, and it's exactly the problem I'm having.
Shouldn't the mouse move if it's hooked up properly?
I have a Happs Optical Rotary Joystick, and the rotary wires go to the Player 1 Rotary interface on my Opti-Pac. I've been trying everything, and using the mouse cursor as the test....it has never moved, not even a jiggle.
Now it also just so happens that I had wired it up incorrectly at first, and am scared poopless that I've fried something. Windows plays the "device detected" sound when I plug in the Opti-Pac, and I'm reading +5v in all the right places, so I think the Opti-Pac is ok. It's the encoder board of the rotary stick I'm concerned about -- does anybody know what I can test for on it to verify whether it's dead or not?

Sorry, I never posted a solution. I figured it out in the end.
The problem was the alignment of the PCB on the joystick itself. I simply loosened the bolts holding it to the mounting arm and wiggled around until I saw movement. Some of the opticals like to have the board offset slightly from the axis of the wheel (mine was on the order of 10 degrees from the plane of the wheel). Give that a try and see if it helps. You can even swing something between the opticals to see if the mouse gives movement (or have a multimeter on a + or - axis lead and detect current).
