Title: Monitor Interference
Post by: Halo on June 03, 2004, 09:40:28 am
Hi there

I have an arcade cabinet that seems to be showing background interference (like when an analogue TV signal isn't too good). It's noticeable in between screens, like when the screen is fully one colour with just a bit of text.

The game in the cab is Streetfighter, and the cab is brand new, with a brand new 15khz arcade monitor.

I'm just wondering if its the game or the cab (the games green is shot and has never worked properly) .. I'm waiting on a another Jamma board.

If it's the monitor .. is this just RF interference and how do I cure it to clean it up?

Thanks :)

If the pattern is "herringbone" (as the experts call it) which newbies would call a fine "worm wiggle" you need to connect a jumper wire on your power supply between the "Frame Ground" terminal and the DC output Ground terminal.

fyi those eBay UK jap cabs are the same type as the ones used here

  http://www.hardmvs.com/xml/jpn/jpCabs.htm (http://www.hardmvs.com/xml/jpn/jpCabs.htm)

Scroll down to the SuperNeo 29 machines. The only difference being the changed marquee and extra buttons.

Have you rotated the monitor yet?

Its totally off topic and the wrong forum I know but I am glad that someone finallly came through and got some of these machines into the UK.

Thanks man.

Okay, The FG is easy to find on the Switching Power Supply (the big letters FG mainly .. thank God they were there!)  How do I locate the ground terminal for the DC Output of the game .. is this on the Jamma loom? (I'm a newbie and haven't even got a multimeter to check things out!)

Thanks

Tony

Hey man! That's really cool to hear .. thanks a lot bro!

It was a logistical nightmare, truly .. and the costs looked like they were going to spiral out of control .. but now they're here .. I'm so glad it finally happened!

Thanks a lot for the link, I'll go and take a look now.

Man .. the people here rock, this is about the fifth time I've come here really needing to know something .. I just hope I can give something back in the future!

Thanks again  :)

Oh .. I haven't rotated the monitor yet .. basically the guys making it said it was fully rotatable, but as I haven't rotated mine, I thought I'd better not post that on the ebay sale. I really don't want to disappoint anyone.

Just to clarify, my switching power supply is labeled, from to bottom (Japanese style cab):

+12v (2.5a) - (connected to game board, fan, coin counter)
-5v (1a) - (not connected to anything)
Gnd - (connected to game board and fan)
Gnd - (not connected, but theres a line pointing to the above Gnd, which seems to indicate they're linked?)
+5V (15a) - (not connected)
FG
AC
AC

Which one am I connecting to the FG?

Thanks  :)

halo,

did you do a bulk buy from coinopexpress? reason I ask is I was planning on doing a bulk buy with a guy from another forum but we didnt want 20 cabs all same, were going to go for a variation of Sega and Namco cabs with a couple of Megalo 2 's (cos everyone loves mine so much)  also wanted to know if you got hit by any customs charges, gotta agree with the other guy (even tho I was/am planning same myself) nice to see someone bringing the jap style cabs to the UK shores damn good timing and I for one hope you do well from it,

Hey .. I typed this once and it disappeared!!  :-\

Yep .. my Dad works all over, Japan / China / Malaysia .. but as luck would have it, he's currently living in Hong Kong, just down the way from the CoinOp offices. He speaks the language and gave me the nod, after me asking him to look out for me.

I met with him yesterday and had a long chat about helping out and getting his hands dirty, so when he flies back there .. he's going to have a look around mainland China for other factories and places that sell these Japanese style cabs. He's also promised to go to Coin Op in person and help me by being explicit in what I want .

The combined cost of freighting, duty, forwarding, clearing and so on is daylight robbery, with all kinds of incidental extras like X Ray scans, 'rent', 'low loading', 'deferment', and several others .. none of which I have any idea what they are. All I know is I had to pay them to get the cabs through. Then theres the storage, and I took a bank loan to fund it all. So brave or stupid .. I'm not sure yet  :-\

I'll definitely be bringing in more cabs, and I've also looked at the other ones Coin Op offer, my favourite is the Exceleena :). I've also been looking at lots of cabs in Taiwan and Korea, again I'll need Dads help .. but there's some pretty good uprights out there too, and Dad reckons you can get some fantastic deals. So .. if you need a container share, or any help, give me a hollar. I live ten minutes from the docks here in Southampton where they come in, and the storage place is about three miles from the docks.

Yep .. those Megalos are awesome, and I love the Net City, New Astro City and the twin (versus) cabs too. The only problem I saw with that is that with odd shaped or big cabs, I might only get ten or twelve to an order, and I really want to keep the selling cost as low as poss.

Great to hear from people here!  :)

The FG terminal on the power supply should get jumpered to the either one of the GND terminals on the power supply. FYI those GND terminals are the DC output ground.

if your serious about that then feel free to contact me at ANYTIME !, seriously!!  wish I'd come back on here sooner/finished my cab earlier, we could have been having this same conversation ages ago,

off topic, have you sorted yourself a cab out of this ? IMHO jap cabs make the best MAME machines, if you have I wouldnt mind seeing some pics

For sure! If you want to hook up and bring back a number of different cabs, lets knock our heads together and see what we can do! As Dad will go in in person next time, the bigger the order, the more chance of getting a discount .. and he deals in Asia all the time, so he knows the score. I'm sure we can both save money that way as a bonus :).

Drop us a mail at tony@djhalo.com when you're ready and we can have a look what's available if you like .. get a rough idea of what we want, and start sketching it all out .. will be much more exciting for me having someone to share the experience with!

 :D

That's great .. thanks very much once again Ken :)

Apologies to all for wandering off of the topic .. enthusiasm getting the better of me!

One more question for anyone in the UK .. does anyone know what the UK equivalent for the 18guage wire used to wire arcade games is .. I'll pop down to Maplins and see if I can do the above myself.

Thanks again everyone  ;D

Glad to help. This is a common problem in many machines that were never converted properly or had their power supplies changed.

Ken Layton, thank you, I have been having monitor 'interference' on my WG4951 for about 18 months after getting my cab and it was bugging me so I took your advice about the jumper wire on FG and it worked.

Thank you so much.
