Post by: reptone15 on June 01, 2004, 09:15:19 pm
Ok, First off, Hi, I am reptone.

Now that thats out of the way, can someone get me a tutorial on how to convert an old (not touchscreen) counter top Video Poker/ Trivia machine into a Jamma machine? This is gonna be my new project, I am really exited....

First thing you need is a Jamma harness. Next thing is the game cabinet's existing power supply might be too small of output rating (only 5 amps on the +5 volt line). You'll want to upgrade the power supply to at least an 11 amp rating if it is not already.

Well, something like these (these are not mine, just stock photo from ebay)

and make it into something like this:
(I will be using a different game, it will probably have joysticks (yep, maybe two players if I can fit them in))

Also, how much do you think it will cost me?

I changed the title so people dont get confused with the Bartop type games. I was wrong in naming them.

As ken said, buy a jamma harness, arcade power supply (if one not already in there) wire up the buttons/joysticks to the appropriate pin on the jamma harness and away you go--should be fairly straight forward.  How much it costs depends on how much you have to work with and how much you want to do--without knowing both, there's no way we can say.  I'd be interested to see how you make out--seems like a neat idea although 2 players is pushing it i think.

why not mame it?

Ah, the easy question. Because I want to say its real, not just a pc in a box with a mini monitor.

The Jamma harness, how do I hook that up to the monitor (and controls I am quite new at this.)

Maybe you had better start over and tell us exactly what it is you are working with--whats in the countertop you are converting?  is there a monitor in there, power supply etc?

do a google search on jamma pinout and you'll see what pins are what in the harness.

I think the "why not mame it" came from the sad fact that with a cab that small VERY few real game boards will fit in a cab that small.

The 3-in-one, 4-in-one, etc. Jamma classics the electronicamuse@aol.com sells would fit perfectly in small cabs like that as the board is only 8" by 8" and it's Jamma.

Well, I need to get one. I was just about to ask what is the best countertop that I can get?  If there was just a monitor and a powersupply, what else would I need?
