Title: Best Trackball and Spinner games?
Post by: sofakng on May 29, 2004, 01:23:37 am
I realize there is already a topic for the all-around best games, but what about trackball and spinner games specifically?

I've purchased a Happs 3" trackball and an Oscar's Controls Vortex Spinner, but I haven't really played many trackball or spinner games.  The only ones that come to mind are Golden Tee Golf II (trackball) and Arkanoid (spinner).

What are some other good (...great?) trackball and spinner games?

Well I would say the majority of people on this forum install a spinner to play either Tron or Tempest so that's a good start. Also driving games can use spinner instead of wheel ( mostly ).
Trackball=Missile Command, Centipede, Marble Madness, Crystal Castles etc.

I like Puzz Loop, although it's a pain to play with a joystick since I haven't installed a spinner..YET.

And I'll be the 1st to mention Cameltry.  A DEFINITE must for the spinner.

CABAL was a game I always found amusing.  And that's another game that used 2 trackballs (well if you want two players simultaneous anyhow).  Also the Atari Classics (I don't know if I have the name right - it was unreleased and has an update to Centipede and Missle Command) allows two players at the same time.

I like the the new game ARGUS, where you're a trackball controlled superhero.

another good trackball game is QUANTUM.

Gotta give another vote for Cameltry, which I never even heard of before this group and building my CP.  Really fun.

I tried the Irritating Maze and found it to be, well, as advertised.  Interesting, but for whatever reason I'm terrible at it.

Tempest is the #1 spinner game of all time, imho.  And actually I'm finding that many shooters work pretty well with a trackball--certainly not to the level of guns, but I finished Area51 with a trackball and did moderately well.

Shuffleshot.  I also use my trackball to play Star Wars and Tail Gunner since I don't have a yoke.

Any 360 degree driving game is a candidate for the spinner.

Thanks for all the great suggestions!  Keep them coming!

So far I've only really played Missile Command, Golden Tee Golf II, and Centipede.  They all work great with MAME32 and my Golden Tee trackball (Happs 3") and my Opti-PAC.

However Marble Madness does not respond well *at all* to the trackball.  I have to swing the trackball a TON and the marble barely even moves.  I've tried tweaking my settings from instead the game (Analog Controls menu) but it doesn't seem to help very much.

Anybody have any suggestions?

From what I remember that's the way marble madness is...you really have to spin and spin and spin to get that little sucker going.

You can't fling the ball around in Marble Madness.  However, you should be able to just get the marble moving fast enough to jump from the track on the starting race to one of the side platforms (although it's hard).  If you have it over-sensitrive, you'll get backspin.

Don't forget that your Windows mouse settings and driver have an impact here as well.

I just checked mine.  For my 3" Happ trackball, I have the sensitivity at 50% and I can jump on the first level.  At 30% I can't.

What are your Windows mouse settings?

I'm using an Opti-Pac with the default USB driver (in case that matters).

I'm using a mouse hack with a Microsoft IntelliMouse driver.  Remember that an arcade ball is very low-resolution as mice go, so kick the mouse speed to maximum and accelleration to none.

Here's a good test: Do you have Camel Try installed?  Put Camel Try in service mode; one of the tests will tell you how fast you're spinning the trackball.  Start spinning slowly and work your way up through spinning as fast as you can.  You should progress from "Very Slow" to "Very Fast". If you get to "Very Fast" quickly and it drops off, you're getting backspin; if it never makes it to "Very Fast" something's not sensitive enough.

A great spinner game, one I never heard of before I started poking around the 1000's of games in Mame, is Tac/Scan.  If you have a decent sound system, turn the sound up on this one, turn the lights out in your arcade room and enjoy the experience.  One of the coolest sound experiences this side of Defender.

Here is the KLOV listing of Tac/Scan
