Title: Number of buttons for console machines
Post by: CGRemakes on May 25, 2004, 09:37:43 pm
I'm not sure if this fits better here, or in the console forum.  If it is more appropriate elsewhere, feel free to move it.  I am in the process of gathering materials for my second machine, and would like to get some info.  I am planning this one to use console as well as MAME/computer games.  The question I had was; I am designing this machine to play mainly fighters and sports games (football/basketball mostly).  How many console games (PS1, PS2, GC, XBOX, DC) of these 2 types use more than 6 buttons per player (not including start/select)?  Are there enough to warrent getting 2 more buttons per player?  All other types of games I will just use the standard console controllers.

Madden '04 uses pretty much the whole PS2 controller, including both sticks and the D-pad, so it may be unfeasable to do in cab form.  As far as fighters, I know Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance uses 7 buttons.  (4 attack, 1 block, 1 style change, and 1 special attack).  Also, the switch from the NeoGeo/SoulCalibur four button arc to the Capcom six button can justify 7 buttons per player if you want to keep that particular feel.
