Title: Control Panel - Sloped or Flat?
Post by: dema on May 24, 2004, 09:15:07 am
I'm building a mock-up of some rotating control panels and I needed to know whether or not you have/prefer a flat or a sloped control panel.

most cp's are sloped....but its a very small slope.  the standard is about 1" slope, so if your cp box underneath is 7" tall at the top of the slope, then the front is 6".

I went with the 1" slope as well, with a reasonably deep control panel (I wanted it to fit exactly in a trunk, so about 2' deep or so).  The slope "felt" better than a flat plane.

My first machine's CP was totally flat, but I never got any complaints from the 100 or more people who played it. It just fit better with that machine, though. I Imagine the next machine will be sloped. It's just whatveer fits your machine, and what looks right on the machine.

MY Soul Edge jamma cab is sloped 1.5"-2" (I forget) and I plan on mine being sloped 1.5"

I'm short. If it's not sloped, I DON'T like it.

Mine has about 20o of slope which is more than most, but I also have two rows of controls, so it works for that.  I think you need a little slope to be more ergonomic.  I played around with a "cardboard prototype" for a while to make sure it felt right, before committing it to wood.

I'm 6'2" so I wasn't sure if I should slope it or not. In terms of the woodworking, I think it would be easier and faster to make rotating panels with a flat surface but I wasn't sure if after all that work I'd hate the fact that it doesn't rotate properly or feel right.

I'm planning on making each panel 32" wide and 16" deep. Hopefully I won't have to redo this too many times.

If possible, mine will be sloped enough to prevent anyone from setting a glass of Kool-aid on my CP...

Its a matter of preference, but I think 10-15 degrees is about right.

I think it's a matter of height.  If the CP is lower (around waist level) then having it flat would be best.  If it's a little higher, then having it sloped would be more comfortable/ergonomic...
