Title: White joystick or replacement knob
Post by: DrewKaree on May 23, 2004, 11:36:51 am
I know...I said "replacement knob".

Seriously, has anyone seen a white joystick, a white replacement top, or have an idea of where/how I might fashion one easily?

I'd REALLY like to purchase it rather than have to make it, but if need be, I have a drill press and tap & die set.  I will not make one out of wood, even though it'd be the easiest solution, because it won't jive with the other joys "feel".  Anyone ever paint their joys too?  They make that new Fusion paint that's supposed to stick REALLY good to plastic....mebbe I'll practice on the refrigerator door handle.  All ideas are appreciated.

I used some of that fusion paint on a little tykes picnic table that my kids have. It seems to scratch easily and might not hold up on a joystick.

Is that the table with that pebble texture to it?  Wish I had a pic to explain, but I'm sure you'll know what I mean since you have kid-type projects

I've got a Wico 8-way that has a white knob.

I haven't seen too many of them, but they are out there.
Most of them are probably in the same shape as mine though.
(Slight pits, discoloration, etc...)

I've been looking today, and it's like writer's block, I just can't figure out other search terms for this or the ones I'm using are less than stellar.

I've also contemplated Plasti-Dip, but haven't checked to see if they have it in white.  That's where I'm off to now.  I may have to rethink the color scheme I wanted to use if I can't find this.

I've got Happs Competitions that I'm wanting to replace, in case that helps anyone.

Thanks for the tip on Wico's NoOne.  I'll be checking that too, now.

Yes. The top has a very light texture and the seats have a more noticeable pebble pattern.

Check out vinyl dye.  I hear it's very good for plastics and holds up well.  Alot of pc case modifyers (sp) use it.

Unfortunatly, vinyl dye tends to wear off quickly when used on things that get handled a lot, like steering wheels. I don't think this would work very well for a joystick handle.

The make white Plasti-dip, but for some reason the DIY building places only carry white Plasti-dip in spray cans. You can find white Plasti-dip in small cans at boating supply stores, it's used to keep rope ends from fraying.

Well, I Plasti-dipped a test piece of similar characteristics, and it feels..."plasticky".  I thought it would feel like that, since that's what it's supposed to feel like....thatsa no good....I'm gonna give Plasti-Kote a try and see what that feels like & if it'll hold up.

i dont know how crafty youre willing to be, but im considering casting mine in resin. you can have any colour you want then and it will have the right sort of feel. I havent tried it yet though. what one would do is to get an existing knob, fill in the hole and make a two piece latex mold. then fill with resin! much easier said than done i know...
I know that pretty much anything you try and 'paint' a knob with is going to wear off or scratch.

I've got this hanging around.  It's an older Happ model, it could be fitted with leaf or micro switches.  This one's got leafs, but you could probably swap 'em if you prefer the micros.  The handle has a pebble texture, like on a Ms. Pac stick.  PM me if you are interested.

edit:  It says complete in the picture, but I just noticed the dust washer is gone too.  Easy to replace.
