Hi yall. For my next project, I'd like to build a machine around a phoenix (as in the bird) theme as I will be converting an old machine to "bring the games back".
I'm looking for some hi-res artwork to follow the theme, though and I have NO idea where to start. Well deviantart.com requires a paid subscription to search their site now, and I still wouldn't be guaranteed to find what I'm looking for there. Any other ideas out there on where to find art?
I know the phoenix is a red bird, but I have seen golden reditions that are also cool. I'm open to suggestions. I just want something half-way original. In fact, I like the look of gold on black so that would maybe be even better than a red phoenix.
I'm a technical person - not much of an artist. I could use at least apoint in the right direction. Thanks in advance.

While I'm absolutly ZERO help, I just wanted to say that I think it's a super cool idea.
As it's explained in the Harry Potter films the Phoenix is a bird who lives his life and at the end, bursts into flames and dies. Then he's reborn from the ashes.
If that's not a good analogy for what we do here...I don't know what is.
:)
Sweet idea man.

I would begin by using google image search. I'm sure you'll find lots of images there.

I just did a search on altavista.com and they have alot of phoenix's.
-
I'm not expecting to find anything printable, but I'm hoping to find something good enough and clean enough to vectorize. I searched Google before I posted and didn't find anything. I'll check at altavista.
Thanks for the feedback and tips, though. If you come across anything else, though, be sure to tell me!

Here is an example of a good phoenix. I like the colors and the level of detail. Now I have to figure out:
(a) how to create and implement fire without it looking fake or out of place
(b) how to make full side-art from this one concept image
(c) what name to use and how/where to place it
So you see, I'm still in concept mode. Any ideas/suggestions would have helpful.

have fun turning that in to vector format... :'(

Already did... no problem for Corel's built-in tracer. It laughed at the phoenix like "what's the problem?"

I think that's really cool art but I wouldn't recognize it as a Phoenix if you didn't tell me it was one.
I don't think I'd know a Phoenix without some flames or ashes in the image, for what that's worth...

Agreed. You really need some images of the phoenix from Battle of The Planet / G-Force / Gatchaman. You could probably find some nice ones in the recent comics, DVD releases, posters etc.

Well the phoenix is usually in a rising position. This one isn't. I'm not saying I'll keep this one - just that I like the color and level of detail. Plus I'll give it some sort of phoenix name, too. Fire and all, too.
-
Well your idea sounds cool. Speaking of phoenix; I used to play phoenix on the atari all day. Cool game.
I really dig your theme.

That last one has the kind of pose I'm looking for, but the image itself looks more like a dragon to me. It's scaly - not feathery. The one before it looks something like a peacock. I don't know... I'm going to do a search for "firebird" and hope I don't come up with too many chevy's... brb

Ok I found an animation with the kind of bird style I've had in mind. It's at:

Maybe I can contact this person about the models used in the animation.
