Got a new 19" CRT for my 1st cab. Everything looks great, crystal clear until I select a game. All the games are really "pixely" and look like they have REALLY low resolution. Any ideas how I can fix this? My desktop is clear and MAMEWAH is clear, but the games aren't. What can I do to improve the game resolution??? ???

A question...is this a PC monitor or an arcade monitor?

PC monitor. Would it have anything to do with my PC though? It's a 600 mhz Celeron, 64 MB RAM, 10.2 gig. I'm just using it to test the controls but I wanted to make sure the monitor was working fine too.

Not to be a wise guy but most all mame games DO have really low resolution--they are circa 1980-1990 after all--its hard to tell what you mean--maybe a pic?

The front-end runs in a higher resolution than most of the games. The games are supposed to look as pixelated as originally were in the arcades. ::) Hope you are not too dissapointed ;D

You could try using the -d3d command. Bi-linear filtering helps smooth things out on a PC monitor. You could also try some of the various effects, such as scanlines.

Yeh fellas, I realize that these games are meant to look pixelated, but mine are a little beyond normal. I plan on buying a digital camera this weekend so maybe I'll post a few pics to clear up what I'm trying to say...

I'm not sure if this is your issue, but you might try some of these settings:

Or, if the graphics just look a little blurry, try turning off the hwstretch flag in mame.ini as follows.
hwstretch 0

Well the monitor is likely overkill for the games. They'll look pixelated on a VGA monitor because they don't have that authentic low-res "fuzzy" feel to them. In other words, they're TOO good. I recommend giving scanlines a shot. Otherwise you could give AdvanceMAME a shot.
On a totally different note, you go to A&M?

He said the desktop / MAMEWAH were 'clear', so I think you're right, hardware stretch is probably on (it is on by default after all)...

Alan, Class of '99. You?
Thanks fellas. I'll give the hwstretch a try.

Well I spent 2 years there, but didn't finish there. Otherwise I would have been the Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 2001! My brother finished up there, though. In fact, most of my family did. My dad lives there, too.
Back on topic, though. How's the monitor situation?
