It was hard deciding which to put in the eight. If I missed one that really should have been in here PM me and I'll check it out.
-
I'm a little concerned about the format of this poll. Three of the choices
(WHERE THE GAME IS NEVER OVER, The Game is Never Over, and GAME NOT OVER) are essentially the same choice with slightly different wording. This will cause their votes to be split up, possibly making the Lord of the Rings slogan appear to be more popular in the end.
I hope, when you total the votes, that you consider all of the votes for these three slogans to be a votes for this "concept", and if they total higher than the others, then take the one of the three that has the highest number of votes among them as the ultimate winner.
-
Exactly. I second what Chris says about grouping them as a concept.
-
Fair enough. I hadn't thought of that.
-
That's like saying that you can combine the votes for Kerry, Dean, and Edwards, since they're all Democrats. Maybe the "not over" group should have held a primary first...

That was my intent over the weekend, but it didn't work out that way.

If the combined votes are close, we will do a vote-off between the combined ones and the LOTR one.
edit: Check that, that would be no different from what we are doing above.
I think conceptually "Where the game is never over" and "The game is never over" are conceptually similar. That is, I can't imagine someone loving one and hating the other. If you like one, you will very likely like the other also, so combining them as one is probably OK.
"Game not over" is different. I think it should stand on its own.
-
I've already voted, as I knew what I wanted before seeing your options, and I'm thankful you had chosen what I wanted.
That being said, any chance of getting images made of these so people will have an idea of what each will look like? Kinda like in the design thread?
-

Well, the tricky part about that is the interaction with the top text, which is also being voted on. There are quite a number of combination possibilities. Some of the combinations are technically not possible.
Right now, though, it looks as if it's between two tops and two bottoms, which gives us four choices. One of those, I believe, already has a mockup.
I can mock up the others, but I can't give them the full bling effect... you'll have to use your imagination... :)

Hey, I'm pretty good with that imagination thing! Even if you just put either top or bottom on it, someone may smack their forehead in disgust after seeing it in print...."Blech, I thought THAT was the bomb?!?!"

Here's the last mockup I did. It uses "ONE CREDIT" and "WHERE THE GAME NEVER ENDS". Hopefully it'll also suffice for "THE GAME NEVER ENDS".

One ring to rule them all? Ask yourself if that is going to be "dated" in say 3 years. I like LOTR and all but I don't know if a current pop culture fad is a good basis for a slogan on a token that is likely to be around for a long time.
-
The results are starting to show that the LOTR slogan is sorta popular. I just have one request should it win: change the "1" to a "ONE"

I'll be pretty bummed if that one wins too. There will be a lot of non-geek non-scifi people playing my cab, It sounds kludgy if you are not famailiar with the books/movies. WTF? ;)
edit: Plus, it aint a coin! It's a token!
edit2: Plus, one coin will only play one!. You need 4000 coins to play them all! Lies! (insert Sam Kinison scream here)

Agreed. I changed it.

Well, in case it wins, here's what it might look like:
-
And yet, even with the [IHMO] not-optimal slogan, this coin will be unreal.
thanks Chris.
{edit. made this a little more diplomatic. :)}
-
Well, the other two polls are turning into runaways, so the top text looks like it's going to be "NO CASH VALUE". That makes it a contest between the above image and this one:
-
Side-by-side for convenience.

-
Will there be a runoff between the top two slogans?
-
I don't understand this "The Game Is Never Over" slogan. Uh, yeah, the game IS OVER when you run out of lives!
As for "One coin To Play Them All" , uh how are you "playing them all" for just one coin? Don't you need a bunch of coins to play them all?
Can't someone come up with a better slogan? Something to do with Retro, Nostalgia, Re-living our youth or something like that?
Personally, I don't like any of the current slogan ideas, hence I voted NO SLOGAN. BAH! :o
-
I also think this poll needs a second run. I'd say take the two most popular and run another poll. (Or do two runs and have 5000 with one slogan and 5000 with the other)
I don't understand this geek reference that keeps coming up. I'd say geeks have no humor and thus they would rather choose for the save humorless options. So I asked several "normal" people (i.e people who don't build their own arcade cabinets) and they all didn't get things like "where the game never ends" and rewordings of that (you can play forever on one coin?) or "good for extended play" (huh?) or "Ludo Ergo Sum" (didn't know these games where that old), but without exception they liked the "one coin to play them all".
I didn't say which one I liked, just gave them the list. They did of course know I was building a cab that could play all the classic games and I guess they immediately picked up that reference.
-

Yeah, but you have a cabinet in your house with a bucket of tokens and the key to the cash box! The 'game' is never over.
I dunno. Not many of these grab me that much either. I actually like the latin one because it is clever and coin-like.
-
... but without exception they liked the "one coin to play them all".
You know, this makes so much sense to me. This is the only slogan that actually says what the coin/token does.
Maybe there is a way to rework this so that it says that this one coin can play all the games without the LOTR reference?
How can a group of people capable of such great work not come up with a good slogan?
-

Well, it's not a coin, it's a toke,. and you can play them all, but only one at a time. So, to rework this phrase slightly to remove the LOTR reference, how about:
"ONE TOKEN ONE PLAY"

That was why I preferred "Where the game is never over", which applies to both your game room and BYOAC. But I was the only one who voted for that, and I'm fine without "Where", so you can consider my "Where the game never ends" vote a "The game never ends" vote.
-
Rock on. My slogan suggestion is in the lead! To think it was the first thing to pop in my mind!

The Lord of the Rings has been immensly popular for a lot longer than the current movies have been around. I would have loved this slogan as much in 1982 as I do today. You're being very unfair refering to it as a 'pop culture fad'. LOTR is fantasy/ sci-fi icon. I guess I've always assumed that most people who are into video games are also into fantasy/ sci-fi. Is this not the case?

I have never seen an LOTR arcade game. (Doesn't mean there wasn't one, just that I've never seen it.) Do you have Lord of the Rings sideart on your cab? If not, why not? Are you not a fan?
-
Now this is unexpected.... GAME NOT OVER is roaring back from the back of the pack...
-
I didn't mean to imply that I'm a foaming at the mouth raving Tolkien fan. I just thought the slogan was clever and seems like something that would appeal to general fantasy/ sci-fi fans.

Star Wars is a icon as well. Star Wars has the added bonus of actually haveing arcade games made of it. Why don't we use the slogan "May the token be with you". It's sappy but yet a few years ago before Episode 1 was released I wouldn't be surpised if this got just as many votes as the LOTR slogan today.
Point really is that the slogan is a cheesy rip off of something that has nothing to do with arcade games.
-

But this isn't a sci/fi fantasy token. It's an arcade token.
I'm sure there are many LOTR fans who also enjoy Star Trek, but I doubt any of them would have wanted to see Legolas using a phaser instead of a bow when the movie was released. They would have probably felt like something they loved was desecrated to pander to a few fans who like both and would like to see such a crossover.
Well, I feel more strongly about an 80's arcade experience than I do about either LOTR or Star Trek. After being a member of this board for so long, I see time and time again people looking for authentic art, authentic materials, authentic controls. The only reason most of us have coin doors in a home-only machine is to get the full arcade experience. Why would we suddenly want a token to be related to a different genre altogether? It just doesn't make sense.
-
I don't think the "ONE COIN/TOKEN TO PLAY ALL" slogan is that much linked to LOTR fans either. I haven't even seen the last 2 parts of the LOTR movies! I saw the first one part on DVD though.
-
This is just my 2 cents, so take it for what it's worth.
I feel that the "No Cash Value" adds to the arcade feel, since all the tokens say this so not to be confused with real money.
The "Game Not Over" really is a shorten version of "The Game is Never Over". The way it reads reminds me of the days I played the older games of the 80's like Missle Command and when you died it let you know "GAME OVER". It's also the sort of Mantra cry of MAME. "Game Not Over".... the game will be over only if an/or when this wonderful hobby dies and emulation stops.... The game will be over when they are no longer played and forgotten about. :'(
!!!!! LONG LIVE MAME and GOD BLESS THE DEVs !!!!!!
;D
ok... sorry about the soapbox thing..... You can go back to you normal lives....

Let's really do this right: "MAY THE TOLKIEN BE WITH YOU AND PROSPER." There, now we have 3 pop culture references! ;D
-
If you didn't know that it was a LotR reference, "one coin/token to play them all" would still sound pretty authentic. It's not that far off from "One Token One Credit", and certainly more authentic than "Game Not Over". I've never seen that on a token anywhere.

"May the token be with you" doesn't flow very well. "May the games be with you", maybe. Or "The games are strong with this one". How about "You are not a gamer... yet."
-
"You are not a gamer... yet."
haha! I like that

Well, then use "One Token One Credit". Problem solved. :)
and certainly more authentic than "Game Not Over". I've never seen that on a token anywhere.
I agree that "Game Not Over" doesn't sound authentic on an arcade token; I resisted it from the beginning. "Where The Game Never Ends" sounds like it could be on an arcade token (not far off from "Where A Kid Can Be A Kid" of Chuck E. Cheese fame), but "Game Not Over" does not. The compromise seems to be "The Game Never Ends", which is unsatisfying, but most compromises are. I still think the simple addition of "Where" to the beginning makes the token far more realistic, but I'm very much in the minority.
But the time for that debate has passed; those who will take either saying are happy, and all that's left are the partisans who will never change their mind, and get more stubborn and unhappy with every argument. Pretty soon, people will be slinging unhappy smilies around, and eventually someone will compare someone on the other side to Hitler. Godwin's Law in action. :-\
(EDIT: Spelling and formatting)

I hope it doesn't come to that. We're all adults around here, right?
(Okay, okay, we're kids in adult's bodies, but still... :))

Well I'm not going to get all bent out of shape over this, and I hope no one else will either. It's just a minor detail in any case. If the "one token" slogan upsets so many people then by all means lets not use it. I think it's clever, but that's only my opinion. I'll be buying these tokens regardless of what the group decides.
I'm just happy that Santoro picked up the ball and is making this happen. I'll certainly not start throwing around the unhappy smilies! Here are a few to prove it! ;D :) :D ;)

Seeing how close this one is probably going to end up, and given that this one has significantly more votes (15% more, actually) than any of the other polls, perhaps we should get the IP logs to make sure there hasn't been any ballot stuffing. It's such a polarizing issue, after all...

I was thinking just the same thing, but I was afraid to say it...
-
These polls would be better without all the chatter. Everyone seems to be trying to influence the voting the way they want it. It should be a simple vote, with discussion in another thread. Hey, you see the slogan, you pick the one you like. Just me $.02

Understandable. I figured that others were noticing that too, and most of my opinions are unpopular anyway, so what the heck. :)
If the logs were not available, we could have a roll call, though that might be hard to administer. Plus some people might like the anonymity of secret ballot.

On the other hand, both of the other polls are runaways, and this one has become so divisive that I can see people, even if they're not stuffing directly, encouraging people they know who aren't even planning to buy tokens to vote.
Maybe you should only be able to vote after Santoro receives your money via PayPal... :)
-

There you go!
I think at 4pm, if we put the two tied entries up against each other the voters from the 'losing' slogans will allow a small majority to emerge. If it is still tied after that, heck, I'll just pick one. I can't stand this anymore. It's a quagmire. ;D
-

If you do that, wear your flak jacket.
What do you consider tied? Absolutely identical? Within a couple of votes of identical?
Personally, I think it's already clear that most of the people have weighed in and the danger of false votes is getting higher. I think we should have the top 3 vote off against each other, with the votes either here in the forum or by IM to you rather than a poll, and ignoring any of the votes by people who suddenly pop in out of nowhere.

-
I agree with Chris on this.. Put the top 3 at 4pm up for a vote, but a PM vote so not to have 20 million polls running again... One PM = One Vote.... whatever time table you feel is fair for voting.....
-
I fail to see how "Game not over" or "The game never ends" would be more authentic either. I only know "Game not over" in relation to MAME and noone that will play on my cab will know MAME. So in fact noone besides me will know what "Game not over" means.
-

Why not an open thread with the voting there, rather than a poll. I would rather not do the vote counting in private lest I be accused of rigging the votes again.
I also like the idea of only polling those who intend on buying. If you vote, it is a gentleman's agreement that you are buying. That might eliminate some clutter.
-
That's a good idea, but if your vote is not picked then you would not be held to the "gentlemens agreement" right?
-

Unfortunately, yes. ;D

A one day poll. Us modem users didn't get a chance to vote. How outragous. I wanted "All your token belong to us"

Based on a lot of solicited and unsolicited feedback, he group as a whole really wanted this to move along. Read the theads - I have been bending over backwards trying to do what the group in general wanted. Apologies to those who weren't able to check the forums during the voting period. I have no doubt that there are others who are annoyed by this as well.
But I have to ask - what's it got to do with modems? ???
-
I think that he was just commenting that the voting flew by so quickly that dial-up modem people didn't have time to load the poll before it ended. ;)
I'm a little confused over this whole token thing. With so many different threads its hard to know where to look; what is the final design that's been decided and what is your cut-off date for orders?
-

See my signature for the URL of the ordering thread. I am taking pre-orders until I get enough to show that I really do have demand to cover most of the cost. I don't imagine that will be more than a few days since I have about 20 already.
-
But I have to ask - what's it got to do with modems? ???
Duh, if you haven't dialed up in a day :) I have to keep the phone line open as much as possible, job hunting and all.
