Title: TOKENS: How to proceed..
Post by: Santoro on May 13, 2004, 08:16:18 pm
The designs below, by PixelHugger and Chris are mostly complete and many have expressed that "these are the ones."  Should we use them and sotp, or should we wait through the weekend to see if more good ones pop up?

This set is good, but I think that it should either be both sides stippled, or both sides unstippled.

stippled on both sides. "Game not over" or "Game never over" gets my vote :)

I like the front stippled, the back unstippled; I think there should be contrast between the front and back.

I agree that "that it should either be both sides stippled, or both sides unstippled". I also agree that "get rid of extended play".

What about "Step up to real gaming excitement!" just like the title on the main webpage?

Wow.

I got sick and didn't check the fourm yesterday- You guys've been busy!  At first I was dissapointed because I missed most of the design stage- but after catching up on all the missed posts, I've gotta admit, the designs you've ended up with are the best ones out of all of 'em.  I love Men's Room guy on the front and Atari Guy (whom I'm proud to say I recognized ;)) on the back.  I also agree with Chris; stipling the front and not the back makes for a nice contrast.  The ONLY concern I have is the size fo the rim text on the front- but I don't see how Pixelhugger can make them any larger without drastically shrinking the BYOAC.

In fact, even though I answered the poll in favor of waiting 'til Monday, I'd like to change my vote- These Rock!

I would like something other that Good for Extended Play. I agree that "that it should either be both sides stippled, or both sides unstippled".

The guy on the side with the cabinet looks just like the United Way (http://images.google.com/images?q=united+way&ie=UTF-8&hl=en) guy.

Edit:  I just found this interesting.  It's not a criticism at all, as I think it looks excellent.

I guess there are still 2 issues. Maybe we can have a poll for the stippled issue and one for the tag line.

Stippling:
- both sides not  stippled
- both sides stippled
- front (BYOAC side) stippled and back not stippled
- front not stippled and back side stippled

slogan:
- GAME NOT OVER
- GAME NEVER OVER
- GOOD FOR EXTENDED PLAY
- THE GAME IS NEVER OVER
- GOOD FOR ONE GAME
- COIN UP AND PLAY
- PLAY ONE CLASSIC
...

Allthough with the stippling I really think it's hard to tell what it will look like eventually. I have never seen a coin that had that stippling effect. That could be for a good reason or just beacause noone ever thought of it. Personally I guess it will make it less shiny and thus less attractive, but it's just a guess since I never saw it ...

I would offer my opinion that by having the background stippled, it would tend to highlight the nice shiny highlights.  Sort of the same way dark paint brings out the beauty of bright white trim in a house.

Either way, this token is going to kick butt.

Double Stipping and "The Game is Never Over"

(but I've already said this in the artwork thread)

I'm working on coffee mug/T-shirt/mousepad RetroBlast artwork with the "The Game is Never Over" slogan (using CafePress) Looks like I should be asking PixelHugger for some help on the art!

Not quite.  The Atari guy has thinner arms than the United Way guy.

The body is shorter on the United Way guy, too.  And I hear he picks his nose.  ;)

The designs are great. I don't have much opinion on the stipple effect one way or the other, but I would rather see one of the variations on Game Not Over/ The Game is Never Over than Extended Play.

Edit: I just saw the other thread that has them stipled on both sides. I have to say I like that better.

I love the BOYAC side but would prefere to have Pixels atomic mame logo on the other side. The side shown is cool, but kinda looks like a Tylenol trying to eat an asprin, no offense, just my opinion and I'm buying no matter what. And I also like the stipple on both sides.

How about -

"Free Game"
"Free Game Token"
"Good for Free Game"

I like "Continue Game" since that phrase is both relevant and actually used in some games.

Overall I don't have much of a tagline or slogan preference - other than preferring "The Game is Never Over" to Game Not Over if we go that route.

I've posted in the Artwork forum on a method to deal with the slogan issue...

Let's take the slogan discussion back to here (http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=13;action=display;threadid=19172;start=272) in the main design thread.

{help, how do I format my URL to go straight to post 272?}

Won't namco have a fit?

If we use the Pac-Man in your avatar, yes.  Otherwise, it's just a circle with a wedge cut out.  :)

I've seen namco go after more stupid things.  Just a word of warning.

If we were selling these to the general public on a website, we might attract their attention.  For a custom run among ourselves, I doubt there'd be an issue.  It does make the tokens less eBayable, though, if that's an issue...

Do you think the Mint will stop us on copyright grounds, like Kinkos sometimes does?   We'd better keep the atomic version warmed up just in case...

I would be real surprised.  Hoffman might have though - he gave me the third degree about why we needed these tokens.

I vote for "GOOD FOR ONE GAME" and both sides match.

I think I'm good for a bunch of these too, but there are like 10 threads on the topic.   With the Hats I think there was like 1 final post with a sticky that just said to order the hats there.....I'm too lazy to read like all 500 posts on the topic....maybe the post with instructions on how to order would get sticky'd with the first post giving instructions.
