Title: How old are you?
Post by: crashwg on May 11, 2004, 12:07:16 am
First off, if this has already been brought up let me know, I'll delete this if it was.  I didn't find anything with the search, so I'm going to assume that it wasn't...

I've been thinking a lot lately about how I wasn't realy too much into arcade games as a kid/teen as I was only like 5 at the peak of the arcade craze.  I'm actually just now catching up on all I missed.  Example: I had never heard of Robotron untill about a week ago!

Anyways, I guess the point is that I kinda feel like the oddball in this community not being a true arcade "freak" (no offense), and looking to see if there are more people on the boards with simillar... uh, backgrounds I guess.

33 going on 34...was like uh..10 when i got hooked into arcade way back in 1980 man! WOW! Actually, first game i played when i was like 5. some weird race driving game, that had a plastic car with a scrolling background. not a video game, but was the beginning of the "arcade" games.

So, i grew up WITH arcade games, computers and other strange technologies.

Whoopie!  :D

PS- though i am going on 34, no one thinks i am older than 25 or 26...i am lucky in that way. my girlfriend is 20.  ;D

26.  My brothers are 10 & 11 years older than me, so when I was 4 or 5 they'd bring me with them to the pool halls and such to help them pick up girls.  "Aww, is that your little brother?  He's so cute."  "Sure is.  Here you go, buddy, take some quarters and go play some Pac-Man while I talk to this nice girl here."

I'm 32 (wife is 23)....

never had a truly successful arcade in the little town where I grew up.... one would open, then go out of business less than 3 months later.. but, I always played when I had the chance... DK, Asteroids, Lunar Lander, Major Havoc, Pac-Man, Ms Pac...

Before MAME, wife's exposure to video games was her NES console, then my PS1 and PS2....

I remember playing that same type of game when I was about 5 too.  It was in a holiday resort in Ireland where Atari had a large presence. Growing up there, I guess we were a little behind the times as far as arcade games went (I'm sure there were plenty of arcades at the beaches on the Irish coast, but not where I'm from).
Arcades didn't hit my town until the days of Double Dragon and Shinobi. Though I remember a bar in town had a Space Invaders cocktail years before that.

I'm 26 now.

From what my dad tells me I started playing atari at 2 1/2 yrs old.  He said that one of his friends from work came over one day and saw me playing and was like "aahh isn't that cute, I'll play along with him but I'll go easy on him cause he's just a little guy."  Well, I guess I put the smack down on him and he was totally amazed. ;D

Almost 37, with a bride-to-be of 34.

I've learned not to underestimate today's very young children on my cabinet.  I've had eight year olds go through spanking us adults one after another with the fighting games, games they've never even played before.  I only have to show a young child once where the coin and start buttons are and they never, ever forget.  Adults, on the other hand, ...

Only car game i had was liek the front of a car and u moved this car back n forth which was really a platic car and they had cars projected on the screen so u just had to dodge them.

it had steering wheel and gear.

was a good thing its what made me buy my first REAL arcade cabinet called SPEED RACE

was the first car scrolling game ever and its 30yo right now :) quite a cool game altho the car noise is annoying hehe

I watched the old Dawn of the Dead last night and that game is in there! There's a sequence in the movie where the survivors are enjoying the shopping mall 70's style and it shows a bunch of arcade games, mostly early light-gun games but the projection race game is  there with a big Atari logo on the dashboard. Exactly as I remembered from the ill-spent days of my youth.

There's photos near the bottom of this page from 'Arcade At The Movies':

Just turned 31 end of April.  I remember my mom holding me up with one arm to place Space Hawk (I think that was the name...kinda looked like you were in the Death Star Trench from the Millenium Falcon's point of view ;D) at the Sears Video Arcade (remember those?).  I remember hogging the controls at the Atari 2600, Intellivision (I STILL don't get that damn Footbal game...and those ridged side buttons HURT!) and eventually NES kiosks in Sears and Woolworth's.  I remember being friends with a complete azzhole just because he had a library of some 80 Atari games.

Man, what I used to do to get my game on :P

I am 36...  Not sure what my first game was.  It may have been Atari football - the black and white one with the X's and O's that was a cocktail table at a local pizza place.  My first love was Defender though.  Andy's Luncheonette in Massapequa (my hometown) - I must have spent $100's on that machine over the years.

23, be 24 in August.  My first real experience with Arcade games was at a near by gas station it was called G-Qwik.

My dad gave me a quarter to play Kung Fu.  I hated it.  Then I looked over and saw Double Dragon.  He said it would be too hard but gave me a quarter to play.  It was sooooo coool.  He apparently thought so too, cuz he popped in another quarter and played alongside me.

That became a tradition to play Double Dragon together until they replaced it with a Narc cabinet.  ---daisies--- anyway.  :)

My GodFather ran a Arcade.  And I remember playing 2 player Galaga on a cocktail cab with my brother on the other end for hours.  Also played Donkey Kong Jr & Mr. Do for mega $$$ which was in the hockey arena.

Also loved playing the old Williams Baseball game.  Where you selected Fastball, Curveball and slider pitch and the other player hit the ball for points.... Can't remember the name...

Hey dude i'm 20 and i'm only catching up

I only ever played 2 arcade games first was super sprint at  rollerskate place as a kid played maybe 3 times and then a "bad dudes vs dragon ninja" at a vide store played that only 3 times.

I'm basiclly missed the arcade scene all together now i have 2 mame cabs and a very rare cabinet i haven't had time to work on (both mame cabs havent been finished yet not at a playable level either) so your not alone :)

Games I remember playing were mainly Sega's mid-late 80's 'classics' - Space Harrier, OutRun, Super Hang On, Power Drift, Thunderblade, Afterburner etc.  I loved all of those and these were some of the only dedicated machines I played on (arcades I went to were cheap and had mainly Jamma cabs).

I did also play on ealier games, although the golden era classics had disappeared by this point :(

23 on the 23rd!! Fiencee 26  ;D

Life story time..

Got my first taste of videos with "Video Pong". Me and my trust paddle at the tender age of 5. Then at 6-7 Super Mario bros came into my life via my friend and I was hooked. Thankfully, my parents decided I should have a computer instead and got me my Atari ST. Many PD shooters and a little STOS coding later and I got my Sega Mega-CD which was the beginning of the end for any creative coding I could have learned but hey-ho  ;D

My first arcade...hmm.. think it was TMNT. I remember just being able to see over the controls  :D

My folks weren't keen on me wasting their cash on "silly" games so it took till I was about 9 before I got to play a real arcade game. Been into them ever since and now have a few mates that work down the arcades (simply from playing games and sharing an interest in old games)

I have had more JAMMA games and (foolishly) sold them on again than I care to think about, and now want something to stick in my workshop to impress my buddies with and entertain me when I'm sick of work  ;)

First found out about MAME over on Dave's Videogame Classics around the time it first opened (I really can't remember what the original emu site was called) and I still check the now Vintage Gaming Network every day.

Oh, and in more important news, I'm getting married in Sept 2006  ;D

19, 20 in December.

First system I remember really getting into was my beloved NES which I was given when I was ~5 by my grandparents. It came with a 3 in 1 cart: Mario, Tetris and World Cup. All awesome games.

Had an Atari ST I think it was but it seemed a bit crappy compared to the NES. And a 486 my dad broguth home one day. me n my bro used to play DOS doom on with no sound and no mouse!

Since then I've had just about every console within a week of release from the SNES through to the latest batch of 3D junk.

I've been into electronics since about that age, ripping apart just about anything I could get my hands on.

PS I hope all your women know youre posting their age in a public forum ;)

FREAKIN YOUNG WHIPPER SNAPPERS!!   haha, naaah I'm 19, going on 20 in December.  I've been playing video games since I could hold a controller basically, we had an Atari 2600 with all sorts of goodies on there.  When I was 3 or so, War had to be one of my favorites, although when your that young, telling the difference between the different tank rounds was near impossible.  We got a Sega Master System the christmas I turned 4, and I picked up a copy of Miracle Warriors, one of the few role playing games for the Sega Master System.  http://freespace.virgin.net/james.groom/MWarr/Mwarr.htm
I was so young when I played that my mind hadn't developed well enough to understand mazes you couldn't see, like I understood there was a beginning and an end, and there was a path you had to take, but I couldn't do it in my head, I had to get a pen and paper to get past even the easiest maps.
I honestly can't remember the first arcade games I played way back, but I remember a local candy store had like 12 cabinets in the backroom, and we would always go there and play some weird games he had like Toki.

What suprises me more is that my parents GAVE me the money to spend playing games,  God bless them.

35.

I have very fond memories of the glory days in the early 80s when arcade games were everywhere.  We had three dedicated arcades within biking distance of my house as well as games at every corner store, restaurant, etc.  The last dedicated arcade in the old neighborhood converted into a Starbucks almost 10 years ago.  If that isn't a sad statement I don't know what is.

I'm 27.  My gaming experience can all be tied to Christmas.  First was the Atari 2600, then the incredible jump to the NES.  The gameboy also made life good.  The local fair always had cool games one week a year.  Man, Dragon's Lair and Street Fighter memories.  Dragon's Lair being,"I can't believe this is the most expensive game.  It lasted all of thirty seconds, and I don't even know what the heck just happened."

Just hit 36 the beginning of this month.

First arcade games I can remember playing were PONG, Stuntcycle, and some very cool pinball machines (can't name one of them though)
MY true obsession came courtesy of the Atari Video Computer System or VCS (what is this 2600 people speak of?) and by the time Galaxian, Asteroids, and Donkey Kong rolled around I was pretty much destined to be labled 'Underachiever' by my middle and high school teachers. Luckily my love for arcade games led to a love of computers, and ultimately led to a career in technology.

Thank you Nolan Bushnel!

I am 21 years old and grew up on anything commodore, be it Amiga or 64.  My dad used to take me to "computer meetings," which were basically huge pirating affairs where we would take boxes of Amiga 2000 games and blank low density floppies and x-copy those ---daisies---.  I really miss the days of booting a computer with the floppies, instead of using hard drives...

I'm 36 today! Happy birthday to me.
I remember playing Atari Football and was big into Track and Field and Hyper Sports. So many quarters at the bowling alley just to get that gopher to appear on the pole vault.

Screw that, I was always broke and I didn't have squat, lived in a tiny apartment that I had to share with two roomates. Now I live out in my secret compund in the middle of the Oklahoma wilderness, the only person I have to share it with is teh lovely Mrs. Stingray and I have a room full of my games and toys. Personally, I'm having much more fun at 35 than I had at 21.

Okay to be fair I don't remember much from when I was 21, so it probably was a lot more fun than now.

not that anyone cares but im 18.  my first arcade game must be either tmnt and bucky o hare.  being a kid was fun.  too stupid to know i should be hating most people and that the best years of your life are behind you and that all that awaits you is taxes, work, and then retirement when your too old to do anything.  getting the high score in star wars will kill you.  after beating obi wans score you have a stroke and then a heart attack when the power goes out taking your score with it.

but yeah arcades are fun.  actually i thought i was the youngest but so far 16 or 15 to lazy to double check.

39 in a couple weeks.

I really feel sorry for the youth of today.  Everything has peaked and there is no WOW factor anymore.

Those of us who remeber the mid to late 70's witnessed some of the most incredible transformations of our society.  We witnessed the birth and evolution of so much technology.  Arcade machines, the home computer, movie special effects, consumer electronics, cell phones.

Most kids today don't look at these items with awe and understanding of how they changed our lives and the emotional connection we have with them.  I hope that the next big thing is more than just ipod's with video.  I hope my kids can say to there kids...There was once a time when we didn't have flying cars and everyone used roads....  Daddy?  What's a road?

It's not just the arcade days.

Do you remember a time when there weren't cell phones?

Do you remember the world before the internet?

Do you remember the black and white television?

Do you remember a time when there weren't computers?

Do you remember a time when you couldn't play video games at home?

Do you remember a time when your stupid 8-track or cassette player ate your tape?

Do you remember a time when the only channels you got were nbc, abc, cbs and pbs?

Do you remember when cars didn't have A/C?

Do you ember when cars didn't have seat belts?

I could go on all day.

It is astounding when you think about what has happened technologically in the past 30 years.  Many of us on this forum lived through all these evolutions.  I myself get caught up in it all and forget myself how much technology has evolved.

Today however it seems like we don't develop new things.  We just keep improving the old things.

Cell phones (to say that cell phones are just an improvement on the telephone is like saying the telephone wasn't new, but was just an improvement on the telegraph), MP3 players, TIVO, Nano particles, E-ink, Pain rays (http://www.defensetech.org/archives/001219.html), DVD, fuel cells, highbrid engines, OLED, LCD, Plasma displays, cloning, viagra, propecia, CCD (digital camera sensor), flash memory, super bright LEDs, artificial limbs that are interfaced to and manipulated by the human brain, Laser eye surgury, WORLD WIDE WEB!!!, search engines, blog, Mars Rover, RFID, Hepititis A & B vaccines (HIV is around the corner),  sequenced the human genome, Roomba, Xbox Media Center.

In short....you are crazy.  I'm just a regular guy.  I'm no chemist or physicist.  If I were I could give you a hundred more amazing examples.

Neither of you own a roomba that makes its own way back to the charging station and docks itself when its batteries get low.  I just hit the button on my way out the door and when I get home Roomba's back on the docking station, fully charged.  And when it gets run daily the floors stay perfectly clean.  My upright vacuum gets almost no use whatsoever anymore.

I don't have a problem charging it.  I don't see how a docking station will make it a better vacuum.  Mine is alwasy plugged in or charged, but its still not a good vacuum.  Do you really think a little robot running around your floors for probably HOURS every day is a tech improvement?  I can vacuum my house in 20 mins and I don't need to do it everyday.  Plus the tray on the roomba is so tiny it's next to worthless

Its a great idea... and I actually like the thing. But it isn't a vacuum.

They're still inventions.  Of course they were enabled by technological evolution.  The telephone wouldn't have been invented if we hadn't figured out how to conduct electricity on a wire; the car wouldn't have been invented without the internal combustion engine that was small enough to mount in the thing.  But you woudn't say that the car is just an extention of the wheel.

On Roomba, y'all just don't understand the difference having a docking station makes.  It's not that the thing isn't plugged in and charged, but the whole process is more of an ordeal for you.  When run daily Roomba keeps your floors completely clean.  Every day when I get home my floors look like they have just been vacuumed.  I know that I wouldn't run it every day if I had to find Roomba and take it to it's plug and plug it in whenever it was finished.  It's not that I wouldn't go plug it in when I saw it, I just wouldn't unplug it and turn it on every day.  With the docking station I just hit the button on my way out the door; Roomba backs off the docking station, goes to work and when finished drives back onto the docking station.  And I don't see any of it happen.

Yes, but household robotics will, and Roomba is a step down that path. Just as the World Wide Web was an extension of technology developed in the 1940's or so, but didn't come about as we know it today until the 1990's.

I never said they weren't inventions.  They just aren't revolutionary innovations.  They are the same thing rehashed.  Sure the cell phone is just the next step for the telephone but suddenly having the world connected whereever they are without the encumbrance of wires is what makes it revolutionary.  It is the way the devices impact society that make them important and special.  Freekin Roomba isn't going to change the way people work, play, think and enjoy the world.

When I can come home and say.... Roomba, clean the floors, cut the grass, clean the leaves out of the gutter, do my laundry, go to the store and get groceries, walk the dog, do the dishes and wash my car; then Roomba will be a technological innovation because it will free the human race from the menial chores that keep us from spending time with our children, going outside, enjoying life and so on.

Title: Re: How old are you?

You're not applying your standards equally across the board.  If the CCD is able to be used as a sensor for digital cameras it's merely a shrunken version of technology already available that allows it to be integrated into a consumer product.  When the fabrication process improved and allowed more complex circuits to be placed in a smaller space the PC was born. But when it's the PC, which is nothing more than a product that was made possible by the shrinkage of existing semiconductor technology, you (rightly) consider it a revolutionary invention.

When talking about impact on society, you've got to be insane to suggest that the cell phone is just an evolution of the telephone.  The cell phone is an evolution of the telephone like a TI-89 calculator is an evolution of the abacus.

And you may not think Roomba is revolutionary, but that's because you're thinking small.  The first PC's were little more than calculators.  There was no Photoshop, DIVX, MP3, WWW, Google, Nero, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Oracle, iTunes, Mouse, 3D or even any kind of GUI, Flash, clock speeds measured in megahertz, let alone gigahertz, hard drives (of any size), etc., etc., etc..  It took thirty years for the PC to become the essential do-everything tools in nearly every home in America that they are today.  The first PCs didn't do much and hardly anyone had one.  What you mistakingly dismiss about Roomba is it is the first useful consumer robot ever made.  And if you consider the exponentially increasing pace at which technology physically shrinks but expands capability, it shouldn't take too much imagination to see where Roomba will lead us, just as the PC has.  Consider this:  If the Xbox 360 had been around in 1998, seven years ago, it would have been the fastest super computer on the planet.  Think of that.  The most powerful supercomputer on the planet today that costs tens or hundreds of millions of dollars will literally be a toy in seven years.

I think you've got it backwards.  Revolutionary new inventions are coming at a faster rate than ever before simply because semiconductors are becoming the foundation of our society.  The only time in history that has seen a jump in technology that even comes close to what we're seeing right now is when the world moved into the industrial revolution.  And the industrial age will barely be a blip on the radar compared to the information age.

I just finished my cab. I feel like a teenager again.

Where I come from (the northern part of the "old" continent), Arcades first had mechanical pinball machines, then came Asteroids, Space Invaders, Missile command, Pac Man, and others

Then I got a Commodore 64, with a 5" floppy drive. Waaauu. Had as lot of fun with my brother playing Summer Olympics. Dogfight was awesome. with Pong  it's one of the all time best 2 player vs. games

I have never played Streetfighter style games. I think I was out of the arcades (in a disco probably), when they came around.

I suppose that's possible, but as far as I know Roomba was the first mass produced, economically feasible to the average consumer, task-oriented robot to be made. Anything else was a non-productive toy (as in, didn't do anything to make the consumer's life easier like cook or clean), or was not reachable to the masses due to economic reasons (too pricey, low availability, etc...).

And for what it's worth regarding the calculator's vs computers discussion -- if I'm not mistaken, the 6502 series processor used in the C=64 was descended from a chip designed for thermostat control.

Which reminds me of something I found funny - one day while at the Smithsonian, in the computer exhibit, I saw a display on the C= 64 computer that said it was the first computer to use the Intel 8080 chip. I was stunned, but without camera and unfortunately could not find anyone to whom I could point out the error. I had to settle for showing my wife, who was not terribly impressed.

Yes, but household robotics will, and Roomba is a step down that path. Just as the World Wide Web was an extension of technology developed in the 1940's or so, but didn't come about as we know it today until the 1990's.

I don't think in 30 years anyone will look back and say Roomba was the birth of home robotics.  I think Asimo will take those honors.

So what about bio and nano technology. Little (micro) robots that will be able to navigate your blood stream and fix up problems automaticaly? I think we will see these in our lifetime, and I think they will extend the health of the weathly people. This is simply hyper minuturaization and uses all the same technology available today, but in a totally different way. I think this can be considered technology breakthrough and will definately impact the human species as a whole

Hey, don't mean to ruin the thread, but did I mention I was 27? >:(

I know I'm straying away from the topic of a great thread that has been around awhile and it sucks that I'm really taking it down a road it shouldn't go, but I thought it was important to mention how old I was.  Of course, this is a common theme in the EE forum, so it's okay to continue to ruin this thread. >:(

Turning 35 this year.  First video game system that I owned was the Sears version of the 2600.  Among the first games I got were "Math" and "Spelling".  I was so excited when I found a local KayBee toy store selling Adventure.

I could just spend time just watching guys play video games (still do).  One of the favorite games I played was Tokio (clone of Scramble Formation).  I think that I dropped $5 at once to play it.  Loved Gauntlet (hated that you health went down even when you weren't moving).

Less than a month ago got an arcade cabinet to play the real MvSF, MvC, and Super Puzzle Fighter.  I will make it so that I can play MAME on it.

I used to love going to Sears so I could play on the Atari.  I finally got one after begging for it for a year.  Pitfall was my all-time favorite game followed by Yar's Revenge.

33.

Old enough to have gotten to the point that stuff that was cool once is cool again.

My wife just picked me up a pair of courderoy pants.  Apparently they are back 'in'.

I immediately had a 5th grade flashback of walking down the hall going 'zwip-zwip-zwip'.

No lie.  I dug out my commodore Vic-20 and hooked it up to an old T.V. today.  I had a cartridge game of Pac-Man that I did the graphics for when I was 14.   It was cool.  The game is so bad but it brought back the memories.  I couldn't believe the thing still works.  The plastic on the case is getting yellowed it is so old.  One the that really struck me as funny.  The keyboard on that thing feels awesome compared to a PC keyboard of today.

I worked (well, mostly hung out) at a commodore dealer  in Ft. Pierce, FL.  I made all the graphics for the maze, ghosts and pac-man by drawing them on graph paper and then converting the drawings to data statements and poking them into memory from basic.  I gave the graphics to the guys and the store and they coded up the game and burned it on an eprom.  They sold the cartridges out of the store.

I was also amazed to turn the thing over and see a "made in U.S.A." sticker on it.  Can't remember the last time I saw one of those.

LOL, I kept celebrating my 30th birthday every following year too. It was always funny when people got confused. "What, you are 30?". "No, but I celebrate I was 30 x years ago." (they think/know I'm a nerd anyway)

This has come up before.  Not sure why the interest except to put the arcade games in perspective with when you played them or did not play them.

I was 57 on jan 19/05 so maybe I can get the older then dirt prize.  I was a teen when there were no arcade games.   Only mechanical pinballs and other mechanical amusements.
