Title: Dave's Arcade Artwork
Post by: drunkatuw on May 06, 2004, 11:19:06 pm
Still working on the side art, but I wanted to get some opinions on the control panel.  Is it too simple?  Do I need to add more?

I dont think so. Remember this, sometime less is more...

Simple and functional..
maybe loose the player 1 and 2 titles...???

I'm not sure if you had planned this, but I would make it where your trackball was centered in your exploding classics.  I couldn't tell since the graphic is flat and your CP pic is not. ^_^  If you feel you need more, I would drop the player1 and 2 and maybe label your coin buttons or outline them and your joysticks with some arrows or something.

I thought about trying to draw curved boxes around the joysticks and buttons and around the coin buttons, but I couldn't figure out how in photoshop, so that's why I decided to add the player 1 and player 2 instead (just trying to give a little color).

The center of the explosion right now is where my trackball is placed.

Here is my first go at some side art.

Thanks for rom for the awesome background which I might be over-using :)

Get a different background..plain black sucks.I mean you are paying for the print so get something that looks better then black.

I would have "Arcade Classics" on both sides also.  Not "Arcade" on one side and "Classics" on the other.  That's just me though.  Ultimately, it's your baby.  Dress it how ever you like.  ;D

If you're masking out my artwork due to dark blue hex's behind then I can make available a version with a plain black background. The reason I put the hex background in was to help hide some banding that I haven't been able to remove using photoshop.
Apollo has requested this also (sorry been a bit slack dude) so I will get on to it this weekend. I'll need to rerender the top and bottom to include more space as you can see in the attached image it's been cut off (I didn't forsee it being used as side art)

That's good work Rom.  Props on some awsome artwork.

I'm planning on a black background because then it will blend in better into the black paint which I painted my cab.

rom,  If you could make the version available with the black background, that'd be awesome.  My side art will probably be around 16x20 or 20x16 (either would work, I can rotate).  If you could make the jpg available like you did last time, that'd be awesome!

Please let me know if you find someplace to host it.  If you can't, I can setup an sftp site for you to upload it to.

Thanks!

Sure that would be cool. If you can PM me with details of where to upload it I would be grateful. Thanks.

I have a question for you drunkatuw...I really like how you added the border.  How did you make those borders in Photoshop?  What tool did you use?

Which border?  The border around the control panel?  That's just the paintbrush tool.

The feather around the explosion or side art.  That's just using the feather tool (Under the select menu I think).

The border around the text?  That's using a bunch of layer properties, including stroke (with gradient fill), Inner glow and outer glow.

Let me know which one and I can go into more detail.

Sorry about that, I should have been more clear.  ;)  I am going to use the same CPO created by ROM but I like how you made a border around the edges to match the shape of your control panel.

Maybe you could explain how you got the lines so straight.  How they connect just perfect, etc, etc...

Now I remember how I created the borders...I had to think about it for a minute.  I used the paintbrush tool with a width of 1px (this makes it easy to connect the corners accurately.  Then you click where you want to start, then hold down shift and it will draw a perfectly straight line ( horizontal, veritical or 45 degree).  Then once I had an outline that was 1 px wide, I added a layer property stroke with a size of 50px.  I'm pretty happy with the results.  The only problem is working with a photoshop file that is 32 inches by 18 inches, it brings my computer to a crawl anytime I had a filter or try to save :(

Hope this helps.

Has this file been posted anywhere yet?  I'd really like to get my hands on it if possible...might have some time over the upcoming long weekend.

Thanks for the quick reply mahuti, but unfortunately, that is the original one that is cropped for use as a marquee.

Printing the artwork was just put on hold indefinitely as I just bought my first house.  I can't justify spending over $100 to print the side art, marquee and CPO when I need to save for a downpayment and furniture.  So The best I can do is print in "poster mode" on my laser printer and use scotch tape to put them together.  Anyone know of a better way to semi-temporarily attach this side art to my cab?  Down the road in a year or so I hope to have the stuff printed properly, but I'd like a better method for now.

Here is what it looks like now (Unfortunately, it slightly reminds me of trashcade :( ).

I print segmented artwork too, as a single father I can't justify spending $100's on cabinet art, all my cabinets are built on a shoestring budget.

Can you dig it?

Is this what you mean by sticker paper?

I hope I can get it at staples, because I have a $25 gift certificate for staples that is going to expire soon.

I know everyone hates Kinko's but I had my CP underlay printed there yesterday on 11" x 17" photo paper for $3.18 CDN.  You side art doesn't look much bigger than that and the output looked fanatastic!

Unfortunately there is no kinko's within 80 miles of me and my side art will be around 17x22 and it seems that kinko's prices go up exponentially when the size increases.
