Title: New Era Video 2/4/8 way joystick
Post by: quibobjinn on May 06, 2004, 08:09:22 pm
Hi, long-time lurker, first time poster...I'm looking for a relatively inexspensive joystick with a restrictor plate for my wife (her biggest games are Ms. Pac-man and Donkey Kong so she needs a "true" 4 way, but she likes to dabble in fighters enough that she needs an 8 way.)  I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this joystick:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=3290342877&rd=1 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=13718&item=3290342877&rd=1)

I just want to know a) how well the restrictor plate works in 4 way   b) how long the throw is compared to a t-stik/happs super  and c) general feel/accuracy

Thanks in advance for help on this and all the help I've lurked along the way.   :)

For not much more money you can get a T-Stick plus from Ultimarc.  I just ordered mine having heard good things about them.

I have a t-stik plus from Ultimarc, and it works awesome. The best part is, you don't have to reach under the control panel to make the switch.

I've looked into the t-stiks and when I calcuate shipping and the extra cost of the sticks, its enough of a difference for me to consider the ones on ebay.  Also, I'm partial to the ball top design, and don't want the long throw of a jstik or the extra expense of having to get the ball top on a tstik.  I have EASY access to under my cp and my wife will play mostly in 4 way, so switching will be rare at most.

Anyone have experience with these sticks?  Or another "off-brand" that's decent?

Have you considered omni stick from groovygamegear.com?  It has a ball top (but not  the classic look unless you want the retro version) and it is switchable.

I have considered it (the basic version) but haven't looked into whether a)it needs to be top mounted and b)what the height on the shaft is.  I'm poor in the tool category (no router or reciprocating saw) so I need to bottom mount a "tall" stick becuase I'm using 3/4" MDF(this is the other issue with the t-sticks, I'd have to completely redo my CP.)  Also, this joystick looks VERY similar to the one I already use...with the omni-stick I'd have to get two for aesthetic(sp?) reasons.

Also, I think other ppl have asked about these sticks and noone seems to have answered...perhaps I should take one for the team...at least then we'll know...  ;)

What I'm thinking about doing is just getting a dedicated 4-way and adding it as a 3rd joystick on the CP...still it would be nice to have a switchable.

Any more takers before I take the plunge?

I just got a 3rd stick for 4 way games. Looks like all the possible alternatives have been suggested here, so if you're not convinced otherwise yet, go for it and please do post the results, as I'm pretty curious about this other stick.

One thing to realize on that stick from ebay, you'll have to open up your control panel, unscrew the restrictor plate, rotate it and screw it back on EACH TIME you want to switch from 2/4/8 way.  I think those type of joysticks are mainly meant to be put in one of the modes and left like that.

I have the 2 tstick-pluses with the ball tops.  They are pretty decent, although they aren't the greatest for fighters but they are a good comprimise for 4/8 way switchable.

I have a 3/4" with the t-stik plus's bottom mounted.
