You can pencil me in on that list too. Realy depends on if I have a job by that point in time... And I better get working on that soon. ::)
Not too sure if the woman and child will want to come with, but I suppose there's always the posibility.
-
I took the thread off non-sticky. I wanted to get maximum exposure for the NE guys, but frankly it's likely NOT to get noticed, because it's sticky.
-
JoyMonkey...The naswa has a cool beach bar not sure if it will be opened that weekend, but I'll get you some prices next weekend I am going uthere to open up the cottage.
crashwg aren't you from Concord.....You really only need like $20 -50 deepending how much drinking and video game playing you do

UPDATE:
Gentlemen,
As I got so excited about the fact that everyone was gung ho for the date of June 5th. I started this thread not knowing that this is the same weekend of the classic game tournament, I am not sure how busy it will be there but should we still go this weekend or change it?

THanks

Oh, crap!
Good for us, not so good for family fun.
Hm...
-
Peale,
Not really sure it would be good for us because the classic machines would probably be in use for the tournament.

wow...just seen the list of classic games they've got! :o
Shame that i'm in the UK :(
they should open a Funspot over here!
-
Not that I've been in this thread yet, but I was considering coming (from NY). I agree that the June 5th may not be a good idea because of their tournament. You'll probably never touch a classic game unless you are in the competition ($35). As well as it being fairly pack with people.
JD
-
I'm still up for it. Actually I thought June 6th was intentionally chosen so we could hit the tournament (not that I'd be competing or anything).
Has anyone been to FunSpot for it before? Wondering just how packed it's going to be.
-
I'm still in if everyone else is
I've never been to the tournament before so it might be interesting to see .

Im still in.
JoyMonkey- for a nice place, try the Margate hotel. It is pretty close and is a nice hotel up in the region- good enough even for the most demanding of fiancees.

I'm out. Can't afford the $35 to suck @ playing games.
-
jdjuggler ...come on down
Peale...I don't think you have to pay the $35 , that's only if you want to play in the tourney
Teknique...good suggestionbeautiful place but I heard it's a little on the expensive side.
Signed
ED
-
Still, a lot of the machines will be used for the tourney...I want to play, darn it! ;)
-
Well
I am going to my place this coming weekend I'll find out if the games being used in the tourney are off limits to everyone else that goes to funspot

There's always going to be a reason not to go. The vacation season has begun and there will be some event up there for the rest of the summer, bike week, etc..
There will never be a perfect date that everyone is available to go. Ultimately we'll each make own excuses to go or not to go.
Instead of trying to please everyone lets make a plan and stick to it. Then we'll learn what things worked and didn't work for the next time we try something like this.
Ed, I say stick with June 5th.
The main reason I'm going is to meet everyone so if it's at a BBQ or at a busy arcade it doesn't matter to me.

Jason,
I couldn't agree with you more ..your right someone will always not be able to come for one reason or another. I think the only one not coming is Peale seems like everyone else is going.
Thanks
ED
-
I'll give it the old college try. I just want to be able to play.
-
That link just goes to the main page... ???
I suppose, Ed, I can get all of the relevant details from you while moving those cabs. I may be in, I'll have to check with the wife, possibly making a weekend out of it as well if I can find a reasonable motel in the area (I'm sure there are hundreds there).
-
---- off topic but funny---
Two years ago myself and two friends rode to Americade (biker weekend in St. George, NY). We didn't plan in advance, so by the time we got there every place was booked.
The woman at travel lodge felt bad for us, eventually they set up 3 cotts in their arcade. I think we paid $30 or $40 which was under the table and went to the staff.
There's nothing like going out drinking and then coming back to your discounted "hotel room" full of arcade games.
-
I'll be going along with a friend (coming up from Kingston, NH). Hopefully Robotron and Defender aren't on the tourney list.

cool 2 more people glad to see this is turning out well.

ShdoHawk had been on me about becoming active here so this is a good a choice as any to reply to. As far as I know we both are going to be coming to the little get together. I know that he's looking foward to it... I think I'll have a pretty good time too, though I don't share his obsession with arcade (video) games.

At first I was disappointed that the Classic Tourney is going on that weekend (I had no idea, initially), but I have ultimately come to the conclusion that it's perfect , we'll get to see some of the top players tear these games apart. Sure, we may not get as much game time ourselves, but ultimately were making the trip so we can meet and greet one another. I'm sure it'll be nice for all of us to talk to other fanatics. I know that all MY friends are sick of hearing about arcade cabinets. I believe Ed is going to find out what the situation will be like, game availability and such, when he goes there this weekend.
Just wanted to add my 2 cents, since I guess I'm the guy that pinned down the date.

Welcome to the geekshow! I must try and persuade my better half to post a few messages before FunSpot day, she's also not interested in arcade games; though if she gets a few drinks into her she is quite partial to a bit of Samba De Amigo, which involves dancing and shaking maraccas in time with music while starring at a psychidelic monkey that prances about on screen with his pixie girlfriend.
No, really! :o

I figured everyone would just show up as soon as they could. It's 2 1/2 hours away for me. If I bring the kids, I may have to add to that total. But I say shoot for one.
-
ive got a pretty good haul to get there so 1 sounds about right to me.
-
I've got the coupons !.....buy $20 dollars worth of tokens get 50 tokens free. I think it works out to somewhere around 15 cents a token.
Anyways ... 1 pm is good for me but we also need to come up with a meeting spot, beleive me funspot is big and no one knows what each other looks like.
Now as far as showin up at any given time this might be a problem, I do realise stuff happens and people run late but we should try to come up with a suitable time, and please remember some people may be just driving up for the day.
Just my 2 cents
Ed

Less than that, IIRC. Each token before those 50 free cost somewhere around that because you're buying in 'bulk' (can't think of a better word). It's like 125 tokens, I think. Add another 50...sweet, sweeeeeeet deal.
Anyways ... 1 pm is good for me but we also need to come up with a meeting spot, beleive me funspot is big and no one knows what each other looks like.
How about the classic arcade? Meet @ Galaga.
Now as far as showin up at any given time this might be a problem, I do realise stuff happens and people run late but we should try to come up with a suitable time, and please remember some people may be just driving up for the day.
If I'm alone I might stay over, but with the family it will be just for the day. 1pm should be more than enough time to get up there for anyone in NE.
-
1 pm is good here- Galaga is fine.
Since there will most likely be a number of people there for the tourney, might be a good idea to wear a sticky tag that says BYOAC or something.
Tek
-
I've got my BYOAC hat all nicely worn in now, should make me easy enough to spot.
-
If I go... (still not positive that I will), it should be easy enough for everyone to find me.
I'm 6'8", I'll be wearing all black including my black Bruins hat and my red hair will be showing enough for you to see it. If you can't find me... your eyesite is far too bad to play arcade games!
-
I think we should meet outside there is usually a tent set up out front, If there is not a tent outside we can meet in the first floor snack bar in the original building. It's near there outdoor mini golf.
Now crashwg ....you need to come, you live in the area probably the closest to FUNSPOT . I know you said you are working on gettting a job , but don't let money be an issue here come and just hang out. I mean really that's what most of us are going to be doing, because I am sure the classic games will either be in use for the tourney or by the rest of the guys that are coming so I am content with getting in only qa few games. Oh and you worried about the drinking just hang with me , I unfortunately am not allowed to drink for another 4 months due to a BMT and complications.

Driving home or staying over will most likely be dictated by beer consumption. The sticky tag idea has merit. Dorky, but effective until everyone knows who everyone is.
-
Again, staying over depends on who I bring with me. If I come alone I might stay, if not...
-
Guys, I think your date isn't going to work if you are planning a trip to Funspot.
I compete in the Funspot tournament every year. I have attended every classic tournament they have held. Assuming they keep the same rules this year as they have in the past, you will not be allowed in the classic arcade on the third floor. They rope off the two entrances and keep employees there to stop people. If you haven't paid the $35 competition fee, and are not wearing a tournament badge, they will not let you in.
That doesn't mean that there won't be things for you to do. The first floor, with the 8-player Daytona USA, Police 911, etc. will be open. The second floor with stuff like dual Hydro Thunder, Star Wars Trilogy, etc. will be open. However, you will not be able to enter the 3rd floor classic arcade at all, and that is where 90% of the good stuff is located.
If you are dead set on getting in there on the 5th, you may want to call up there and speak with Gary or Ken to see if arrangements can be made. I would think, however, that the answer will be no.
There are also three other arcades down on the pier of the lake. However, they aren't near as good as Funspot.
-
bump
-
If this is the case, we should set another date. I want to play the classics, not the new stuff.
-
HeyI just got home from my cottage and unfortunately MPS is right about not being able to get near the classic games.
Now don't forget that is just one floor of 3 buildings I am sure we can find some games to play to make this all worth it and like I said in the past aand MPS stated again there are 2 other arcade at Weirs beach within 1 mile from FUNSPOT.
So MPS ... You gonna find some time to visit with all of us or what..?
The date is set in my book I will be there on June 5th no matter what . It is the only full weekend I will be at the lake in June, due to other weekend commitments.
BTW.. Even if we don't get to play many games that we like I still think it would be great to put faces with names and besides most of the people coming are within a 2 hr ride
If people don't want to come than that is fine we can have another one also 8). However,If we set another date it would have to be in July/Aug for me to be able to attend.
Just my 2 cents
Ed
-
Yes, I will be up there that weekend. I go to the tournament every year, and I am sure I could break away for a while. I believe there are some other people who have contributed to this forum in the past will be there as well.
Here are some photos from past tournaments on my we site:

I used to live in Shrewsbury, MA up until about a year ago. I recently moved to Philadelphia, and I haven't been back to Funspot since last August. It is one of the things I miss most about New England. I am close friends with the operations manager at Funspot, and I even donated a coin-op & pinball machine to their arcade before I moved.
I have been "lurking" around these boards for about two years now, and never signed up for an account until I saw your messages about a Funspot trip. I certainly don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but they are pretty strict about who goes on the third floor during that tournament.
There are two other arcades down on the boardwalk. There is a third building right on the pier that is mainly kiddie stuff, but I seem to remember them having some coin-ops available.
Perhaps another location could be the Salem Willows Arcade in Salem, MA? Certainly not Funspot, but it is a pretty decent little place.

Hey guys, I'm one of the coordinators of the Funspot tournament. We do need anyone playing to register, but the thing is this - the $35 admission fee gets you 200 tokens, not to mention the chance to hang out with the best players in the world and watch them work (if you're so inclined) and the opportunity to compete in events with cash prizes.
This is only for the classic games, so the rest of the building (newer games, golf, Bingo, bowling, tavern, restaurant) is still open to the general public. Hope to see you there!

Ken Sweet

...and to up the ante on our get togeather, I will be the first to say that I will challenge anyone to a mini BYOAC classic games tournament if enough people spring for the Funspot entrance fee.
So we are meeting at 1pm, did we ever get a consensus on where? Braggin' Dragon?

Only 6 days to go!
I'll be driving up Saturday with my fiancee, we still haven't sorted out accomodation and I can't tell how far FunSpot is from the hotels mentioned previously. Once we get there I would think both of us will be enjoying ourselves a little too much to be able to drive anywhere, so a nearby hotel is a necessity (within walking/stumbling distance if possible).
Anyone know what the best place to stay would be for us?
Is anyone else checking into any nearby hotels?
-
I don't see anywhere that lists the address of this event. The link in the first post is to the homepage. The link in the homepage is to this same post. :)
-
It's in Weirs Beach, NH. Once you're there, you can't miss it, there are lots of signs.
-
The only hotel I can find that seems to be nearby (can't really tell because I'm still not sure exactly where FunSpot is) is The Naswa Resort. It sounds nice and we'll probably end up staying there if there's nowhere closer. I did a lot of Mapquesting trying to figure out locations but couldn't come up with much. Could someone show me where FunSpot is on this map? Is it on the intersection of Rt.3 and a street?
Edit: Found 'Weirs Beach Motel & Cottages' close by.
-
Been a bit since I trolled...
Just checking in Ed- sent you an e-mail too.
Just me so far confirmed.
Gonna go for the tourney even if I come in last at least I can say I was in it.
Ed- my jetski gang is always accepting new applicants, and since your the only one so far, I guess thats makes you vice president or something :)
Joymonkey- Funspot probably isn't on that map- most likely is just off the map to the north on Rt. 3 It is about 5 mins drive away from the Naswa (sweet beach bar!).

I will buy the meats (steak tips,chicken,sausage.etc.)...
and then at the funspot we can figure out what else you guys want, and then just run to the grocery store real quick.Unless you want to volunteer to make a salad, side dish, or desert and then cart it up there ?
I also have some beer (bud light,corona)..what IRISH man doesn't some have beer in his fridge . I'm not sure what type you guys drink so it may be best to say BYOB or we can all pitch in and purchase what we need!

Ed, I won't be carting any goods up with me (supposed to be 70's tommarow) but well get a list going for the BBQ at some point tommarow.
Hey I didn't expect anyone to cart anything up there . There are a few gocery stores in the area. Yea I was thinking making a list at funspot was the way to go, ten run to the store real quick like.

Woohoo! It's finally definite that I'm coming. 'Tis about time eh?
I'm leaving here at about noon ( :P to all of you that have to travel! [j/k]) I'll probably be there shortly after 12:30. Bringing the Wife-to-be, child (9months) and a friend that's pretty interested in the hobby that I'm trying to give a little nudge into building his own cab.
I hope nobody minds the friend thing :-[ He's not a member of the boards yet, but we'll see. And Ed, if we come to the cookout, I'll be sure to put in for some food. You know, so it doesn't seem like I'm bringing a friend up for some free food type thing or something. ;) Oh... wait, you already left didn't ya? Oh well, maybe you've got some wireless web thing or something... Anyways... I think I should head to bed now. In case you dind't notice, I had a couple drinks... Wow, that's the most "..."s I think I've put in a post before!
:-\ Eh, whatever... <- ::) :P
See ya all there. Flagpole at 1 right? I hope I'm right! I'll go check...
G'Night!
