Title: Dual gamepad hacks on one controller?

Okay, I think I know the answer to this, but I want to be sure.  If I wanted to hook up one one-player desktop control panel to two different systems (in this case, PC and a SNES), have all of the wiring and whatnot contained in the console itself, and have two wires poking out the back (one for SNES, one for PC), could I simply wire them to the same switches or would I need to install some switches to change which wires are going to which switch when appropriate?  I suspect I will need some switches so I don't create some sort of ball-lighting, so what kind of switches are there and where can I find them?
