If I am using an arcade monitor with advancemame and arcadeos under puredos, do I need to worry about what's being output to the monitor prior to arcadeos booting up? I am not using a jpac or arcadevga.

Yes, you certainly DO need to worry about the video output frequency before advMAME loads.
I have only played with advMAME briefly, but I think most people set it up to play a sound when it has loaded. It is then safe to turn on your monitor (assuming the advMAME video settings have been configured correctly).
It is also possible to hook a relay up the monitor and pc parellel port to turn the monitor on when it is safe to do so, but it's probably more effort than it's worth.

To save yourself the worry of damaging your arcade monitor, i suggest you get a jpac.
Well worth the money.

I have been researching this for a bit now and I think you are right Acids, the J-Pac is worth the money. ArcadeOs does have an option of hooking up a circuit to the parralel port to turn on the monitor when it is safe but it would be more work than it is worth. Thanks for the responses.
